Elisa's Daily Scoop
NEXT TRIP DEPARTS IN: 26 DAYS

Riverhead, Long Island

Hey there!!
How are you doing?

Well, I had a great day yesterday!
The girls and I were up and at 'em and out of the house by 7:30 am.

After stopping quickly for a nice hot, hot chocolate, I headed for the highway and began making our way to the barn for my girlies to begin their first day of horseback riding camp.

I walked them in briefly and then made my way over to Riverhead.

I took a chance by going over to the hotel early, prior to check-in time and lucked out since our room was ready!

What was even more of a surprise was the coupon book I received filled with discounts for just about each and every store at Tanger! I'll definitely be taking advantage of those deals!!

It worked out well, because I was able to bring in all of our bags as well as the food (snacks, drinks, breakfast and lunch items) I had packed for our stay.

After I settled in, I drove over to Tanger Outlets to grab a smoothie, do some work and then to scouted out the stores for Gianna, who just keeps growing and is in need of shorts and tops, yet again.

I narrowed down the best stores (to save time when we hit them tonight) that appeared to have the styles I know she likes.

We decided since we are actually staying near Riverhead the next few nights, it only made sense to shop at the outlets.

Although the day began with rain and clouds and extreme humidity; by 10am, the sky was clear and blue, the sun was shining brightly and there was a lovely breeze in the air.

Before I knew it,  it was time to go back to the barn and collect the girls.

They were bushed!  We opted to eat dinner in the hotel, which was very relaxing.  Then, the three of us decided instead of an evening swim, we'd hit the fitness center to work off dinner!

You may remember that I had mentioned yesterday that I was planning to visit Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead.

Well, silly me, I read all about the tour, but never took note that the tour days are on Friday and Saturday.  I really did not want to walk around with a map - there is no comparison when visiting a museum or landmark, to having a personal tour given by a human.

I opted out yesterday and, instead, plan to go Friday, while the girls are riding.

Are you familiar with Riverhead?  I never was, except for the fact that Tanger Outlets are here, so I decided to do a bit of research and here is what I came up with...

16 FUN FACTS ABOUT RIVERHEAD, LONG ISLAND
Picture
(credit: townmapsusa.com)
1. Riverhead is a town within Suffolk County, New York, on the north shore of Long Island.

2. The town rests on the mouth of the Peconic River, from which it derives its name.

3. The town is 166 miles southwest of Boston via the Orient Point-New London Ferry, and is 76 miles northeast of New York City.

4. Riverhead is the agricultural apex of Long Island, with 20,000 of the 35,000 acres of the island’s farmland located within the town.

5. European colonists purchased the 'Southold land' from the local Algonquian-speaking Native Americans and Shinnecock Indian Nation in 1649. In 1742, an additional portion was purchased from Col. William Smith and divided among settlers.

6. The town of Riverhead was created in 1792, at the request of inhabitants who asked the legislature to divide the entire area into two separate towns since it was too large and was  inconvenient for the people of the western regions of Southold to attend town meetings and transact other business.

7. River Head was named the county seat of Suffolk County (called "county town" at the time), and its name was later combined as Riverhead.

8. There are four separate beaches within the town, which are open year round. They include Iron Pier, Wading River, South Jamesport Beach and Reeves Beach each offer boating access for residents and visitors alike.
Picture
9. There are nine (9) Unincorporated hamlets within Riverhead which include: Aquebogue, Baiting Hollow, Calverton, Jamesport, Laurel (partially, with the Town of Southold), Manorville (mostly in Brookhaven), Northville, Riverhead (hamlet) and
Wading River (small part in Brookhaven).

10. Other communities include Centerville
Polishtown, Reeves Park, Roanoke, South Jamesport and Sweyze.

11. In the beginning of the 20th century, the town saw an influx of Polish immigrants.[2] This led to the creation of Polish Town, where the popular Polish Town Fair is held annually.

12. Wildwood State Park, located in the town of Riverhead, is a 767-acre state park, which includes a beach on Long Island Sound, as well as a playground, picnic tables, hiking and biking, fishing, a campground with tent and trailer sites, cross-country skiing, recreation programs and a food concession.
Picture
Town of Riverhead, Long Island Town Flag
13, The Flag of the Town of Riverhead was designed by Supervisor Joseph F. Janoski in 1981, responding to a request from the Suffolk County Executive, who had in 1980 asked for flags from each town.

14. The Flag's symbolism is as follows: The upper canton is Waves- the water surrounding the town. The bottom left green field reflects our agricultural heritage and natural history. The upper right green is hope for success for the future. The bottom right blue is for fidelity to the town's past and history moving forward into the future.  The Town Crest is placed over the intersection.

15. Points of interest include: The Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center, Tanger Outlets, Riverhead Raceway, Hallockville Museum Farm and Splish Splash Water Park.

16. Long Island's Wine country is filled with a plethora of wineries including Martha Clara Vineyards, Paumanok Vineyards and Roanoke Vineyards.

Today, started off interesting.  The girls informed me last night that they wanted to attend a riding show this morning, in which t some of the other girls from the barn were riding.

As it turns out, was prior to camp, making it super early.  One of the other moms was planning to go, so she offered to take Gianna and Kelsey and then get them over to the barn following the competition.

I was up at 6am making sandwiches and bagels and packing fruit and headed over to our meeting place - Starbucks - at 7am.

I have to say, it's really wonderful having other moms who are so involved in the girls' riding because we get to switch off car pooling and giving each other a break.  A big shout out to Rosio for her help today!!

And that's a wrap for today folks!!

I think I'm going to hit the gym and take a dip in sit in the whirlpool afterwards!!

The Hollywood Bowl is an amphitheater located in none other than Hollywood, California
  • The Hollywood Bowl is known for its band shell, a distinctive set of concentric arches that graced the site from 1929 through 2003, before being replaced with a somewhat larger one beginning in the 2004 season. The shell is set against the backdrop of the Hollywood Hills and the famous Hollywood Sign to the Northeast.
  • The Hollywood Bowl has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, since its official opening in 1922, and, in 1991, gave its name to a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
  • Public Figures - that have appeared at the Bowl throughout the years include President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mickey Rooney and Edward G. Robinson, as well as such "teams" as Fonteyn and Nureyev, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, Simon and Garfunkel, and Abbott and Costello.
  • Dancers - Mikhail Baryshnikov has danced there, as did Fred Astaire.
  • Musicians - Al Jolson, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Art Tatum, Buddy Rich, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Nat "King" Cole, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Carrie Underwood, José José, Kylie Minogue, Elton John, Alicia Keys as well as various other Jazz and non-Jazz musicians have headlined star-studded shows at the Bowl.
  • The Hollywood Bowl has provided a showcase for the world's greatest musicians. Bernstein, Walter, Phish, Monteux, Mauceri, Koussevitzky, Stokowski, Karajan, Klemperer, and Leinsdorf, as well as Mehta, Giulini, Rattle, and Salonen are just a few of the conductors who have led the Los Angeles Philharmonic in summertime concerts over the past seven decades.
  • Jerry Hadley, Philip Glass, Itzhak Perlman, Gregor Piatigorsky, Arthur Rubinstein, Thomas Hayward, Alfred Brendel, Vladimir Horowitz, Andre Watts, Horacio Gutierrez, Jessye Norman, Plácido Domingo, Beverly Sills, Isaac Stern, Kathleen Battle, Jane Eaglen, Marilyn Horne, Alexander Frey, Jennifer Larmore, Sylvia McNair, Andrea Bocelli, Gil Shaham, Stephen Hough, Luciano Pavarotti—and other distinguished vocal and instrumental soloists too numerous to mention—represent the illustrious talent that has graced the stage.
  • As well as the International Peace Choir, along with Dominic and Cosette, and even my sister Brigitte!

But before we head over there, we are actually going to a lunchtime performance for the International Peace Choir, where
Cosette will be making her debut as the United States Peace Ambasssador!

***STAY TUNED FOR PICTURES TOMORROW***

Speaking of the IPC, I had a travel meeting with the Executive Director last night about our planned 2017 return summer travels to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho - where the kids will be gracing a number of stages in performance, recording a CD, and enjoying the idyllic landscape, all while surrounded by the dozens of lakes left behind by the glaciers of the ice age.

To be perfectly honest both Dominic and Cosette have asked and asked about us returning back to this great resort pretty much from the time that we left (back in 2012..)!

2017 will be another BUSY BEE Travel Year for this Travelin Cousin.
As this choir trip will be in mid July, and we will have just arrived back to Cali only a few days before from a long trip back to the East Coast to do some visiting and bouncing around as well as doing a fun road trip and a Western Caribbean Cruise, all right before going to the 88th MLB All-Star Game in Miami, FL!

Oh the fun never ends!! And that is just how I like it!

Now I've got to do a bit of carpooling to pick up the Austria, and Iceland Peace Ambassadors and then get all of these kids to their call time.

It should be an amazing day of us. And I hope that you also have an amazing day ahead of you!

That's about all folks. I'll be back tomorrow with plenty-o pictures from all of today's events!

Toodles,
-T
