Elisa's Daily Scoop

PIttsburgh & St. Augustine

Happy Saturday!!
Boy, I am so happy the weekend  is here!

Remember what a complainer I was yesterday? lol!
Just tired this week, that's all.
Picture
Anyhoo, funny little story...
A friend of mine was heading out to Milwaukee the other night for a family function.  When I asked what was on the agenda to see and do in Milwaukee (before and/or after the event), the response was "what the hell is there to do in Milwaukee?!"

So, that got me thinking..."What is there to do in Milwaukee," since I've never been to this Wisconsin city AND, I never really thought of going there.

I continued reflecting and thought...
What if I had to go to a family function in a city I never thought about visiting; What would I do?

And I thought of the steps I'd take next...
1) Educate myself on the city.

2) Research the top things to see and do there.

3) Determine how much leisure time I could squeeze out of the visit to at least create a mini meet and greet of the city.
Picture
As a result, I decided to follow up with my friend in an effort to "answer" the question posed.  (Ok, so I was being a wise ass, but it was a fun exercise).

I read a bit about the city of Milwaukee and the top 10 things to do there.  I promptly composed an email to my friend (who was actually getting ready to board the plane for the journey) with a short list of suggestions for spending from 3-hours to a full day in this city; and in closing I added:

"THERE'S ALWAYS SOMETHING GREAT TO SEE NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO!!"

It was received well and with a bit of laughter, but unfortunately, there was not going to be enough leisure time on this short weekend full of family obligations to take advantage of my creative (and quickly assembled) itinerary.

I share this story with you folks, since this little interchange became the inspiration for today's blog theme - "U.S. Cities You've Never Thought About Visiting."

While Milwaukee was initially on MY list to talk about, since I've never been, I decided to let Tanya take the helm for this city, since she has actually been there! (and has pictures!!)

Instead, your's truly will enlighten you with some information about TWO other cities worth highlighting as possible destinations that may not have ever occurred to you to visit.
PITTSBURGH, PA
Picture
(credit: tripadvisor.com)
When most people think of Pittsburgh, it conjures up an image of a gloomy, steel town.

However, it was recently named one of America's most livable cities in 2015!

The second largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh is located at the junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, which form the Ohio River.  It was named in 1758 by General John Forbes, in honor of British statesman William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham.

Did you know?
Pittsburgh has two nicknames - "City of Steel" because there are more than 300 steel-related businesses, and as the "City of Bridges" for its 446 bridges.

The city features 30 skyscrapers, two inclines, a pre-revolutionary fortification and the Point State Park and over 1600 industrial firms which account for over $20 billion annual Pittsburgh payrolls. These include Google, Apple, Bosch, Facebook, Uber, Nokia, Autodesk, and IBM.

Why it's worth visiting?
Pittsburgh also happens to have a wealth of cultural attractions, museums, historical sights, a state park and wonderful shopping and eating experiences to enjoy, making it a great weekend destination.

Here are a few more reasons to visit...

1) The critics are singing the praises of Pittsburgh.
Named one of the "Best Places to Travel in 2016" by Travel + Leisure, rated the nation's "No. 1 Food City" by Zagat and named among the "Top Destinations on the Rise" by TripAdvisor.

2) The Carnegie Museum
www.cmoa.org
Named for its founder Andrew Carnegie, The Carnegie Museum, one of Pittsburgh's most internationally recognized institutions, houses extensive collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings, American and European paintings over the past two centuries, sculpture, decorative art, and architecture.

A haven within the city for outdoor activity including boating, fishing, hiking ad biking trails, 36-acre Point State Park contains one of the country's largest fountains, symbolizing the birth of the Ohio. As the former site of Fort Pitt, of which there now remains only a blockhouse to visit.

Tanya's Daily Scoop
NEXT TRIP DEPARTS IN: 14 DAYS

Going to Milwaukee & Reno

Well folks, I'm not much for Jet-Lag. It really doesn't do much for me. Kinda like caffeine! LOL
Picture
So when traveling and I have to adjust to a new time zone - basically I encounter no adjustment time whatsoever. Which I think is awesome.

Now it's almost the same when I get back home, however I don't keep as late hours as usually do and I usually hit the sack between 11p-12a (which is early for me).
And typically on the norm I enjoy waking up between 7:15a-7:45a...but this is when I am going to bed rather late.

This entire last week has me waking up as or before the sun rises which is around 6:30a - so about an hour earlier than I prefer.

But this morning I woke up super thirsty at 5:45a, I thought that I'd go back to bed, but by the time I went down to get some water (I had some at my bedside and had finished it - like I said I was super thirsty) I was wide awake and again watched the sun rise...but low and behold as I was reading, somewhere in there I dosed off and actually stayed sleeping until 8:15a!!

That was my sleep in, which I don't typically like doing...I just don't like my morning hours being shortened!

It's not that I don't enjoy my sleep and when I'm tired, I can just about fall asleep anywhere and doing anything, but I always fight it because I really like being awake and I don't like missing anything! Do ya know what I mean?
Picture
So isn't it funny how we come up with topic of the day sometimes?!
Elisa shared her little funny story with me the other day and I totally agreed with her idea of us highlighting some cities that are less then typical when you think of going on vacation.

The cities that we are highlighting today are cities that we (combined) have actually been to and had a great time in.
Picture
Having an amazing time in Pittsburgh! (c)travelincousins.com
Like I always say:
"Attitude and perception changes everything. It's not about where you are or what you are doing, it's about how you look at things" there's certainly no need not to enjoy yourself and to make the best out of every situation.

LET'S START with MILWAUKEE
Picture
(c) wiki
Sure I've been to Milwaukee once, and honestly it was ONLY to go watch the Milwaukee Brewers play a game at Miller Park. They won by the way!

Read my related story:

A Good Luck Charm for a MLB Road-Trip

Ya'll know how much I love baseball. Well this was on a dream come true Baseball road-trip that I planned back in 2007. But seriously that was all I did in the city of Milwaukee!

How's about a few random FACTS about Milwaukee?
1. The city has the oldest certified bowling alley in the U.S. - Holler House
(I'm not quite sure what makes it a "certified bowling alley" or if I've ever bowled at a "Certified bowling alley!)

2. Festa Italiana is one of the largest Italian festivals in the U.S.
(This one is of personal interest!)

3. The city has 15,000 acres of park land!
(Awesome!)

4. In the 1880s the city had five English, four German and two Polish daily newspapers.

And since this was Elisa's idea and she had already come up with a great list of things that she would do in Milwaukee, I definitely want to share her list:

Milwaukee Sightseeing bus - 3 hours:

The 3 hour tour begins in front of Milwaukee's beautiful City Hall, the tallest habitable building in the world when it was completed! Next up is a short walk to see the Pabst Theater and a photo opportunity with the "Bronze Fonz." From here you will hop in the bus and begin the driving portion of the tour. You will see the Milwaukee Museum Mile and the East Side. You will also view the beautiful mansions that line the cliff above Lake Michigan.

The first stop on the tour is a chance to enjoy Lake Park and the North Point Lighthouse. You continue on with a drive along Lake Michigan and a 10-minute stop at the Milwaukee Art Museum. From here you travel through the Third Ward and Walker's Point neighborhoods and stop for cheese samples at the Clock Shadow Creamery. Next up is a ride to the Western edge of Milwaukee to see Miller Park, Miller Brewing Company, and Marquette University.

The final stop is a 30-minute private tour and tasting at Lakefront Brewery. Each guest will leave the brewery with a souvenir pint glass or key-chain with a bottle opener on it. After the brewery you return to City Hall and conclude the tour.

3) Basilica of St. Josaphat
Picture
(c)wiki
The Basilica of St. Josaphat is a ministry of the Conventual Franciscans on the South Side of Milwaukee in Historic Lincoln Village.

The Basilica is a Franciscan center for prayer and spirituality, inspiration and beauty. It is home to a vibrant Roman Catholic parish and remains a testament to the faith of the Polish immigrants that created it.

The next city that I've chosen is Reno
"The Biggest Little City in the West"
Picture
(c)history.com
While I've been to Reno a number of times, usually it's more of an in and out type of visit. I'm usually flying in or out, or going to the airport to pick someone up and take them up to Lake Tahoe to come play in the snow with me!!
Picture
Reno from above! (c)travelincousins.com
But there has also been the occasion when I have attempted to check out the city and see what it's all about...
Picture
I'm always ready for a fun picture! (c)travelincousins.com
Now's the time for a few random FACTS about Reno:

1. Reno experiences around 1,000 earthquakes every year.
(I certainly don't like the sound of that!)

2. Gambling in Reno can be traced back to pre-colonial times, with games being played in celebration of hunts and harvests.

3.
Visitors to the Cal Nevada Casino can take a trip down to the pool if they want to swim in both Nevada and California at the same time!
(I've driven past this casino a number of times!)

As for sight-seeing, let's see what I've been missing! LOL
After doing a bit of research, here are my newly found top 3 things to do in Reno...

1. National Automobile Museum
Picture
Solid Copper Body Rolls (c)tripadvisor.com
The National Automobile Museum, located just south of the Truckee River in Reno, Nevada, displays historic automobiles from the late 19th century and from throughout the 20th.

The museum's holdings of over 200 cars are spread over four galleries. Gallery 1 showcases cars built during the 1890s & 1900s, Gallery 2 features cars from the 1910s to 1930s, Gallery 3 the 1930s through to the 1950s, and Gallery 4 displays cars from 1950 onwards. Gallery 4 also includes race cars and the Off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame. Each gallery is linked by a themed "street", featuring vehicles as well as faux shop fronts.

Celebrity owned cars include;

Elvis Presley's 1973 Cadillac Eldorado,
Frank Sinatra's 1961 Ghia L6.4,
John F. Kennedy assigned 1962 Lincoln Continental,
John Wayne's 1953 Chevrolet Corvette.

Sounds pretty cool to me, and now I'm gonna have to check it out for myself!

2. Reno Riverwalk
Picture
Reno Riverwalk (c)travelincousins.com
The Center of Everything! Since The Beginning Reno was established right next to the first bridge to cross the Truckee River in the late 1800s.
By the mid-1900s, Reno had become famous for gaming & nightlife, and the river that ran through it took a back seat to the glitz and glamour of downtown.
Today, local merchants are proud to welcome you back to The Riverwalk District to celebrate the beautiful place where Reno began.

By the look and sound of this newly renovated district, I certainly won't mind a visit to go and check it out and maybe even do a little bit of shopping!!

The next few I found on www.visitrenotahoe.com and boy do they each sound interesting!!

Northern Nevada Heritage Corridor Program

Beyond certain unexpected turns, there are side-roads that trace countless journeys in an age of exploration and discovery. Passageways that resound with the joys and sorrows of those who once traveled here. These secret places of history exist in present-day northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe, if you know where to look. The three tours outlined below will bring history full-circle by offering a driving guide through a place once never imagined accessible: time itself.

Tour 1
Passion in the Desert
In 1927, with the rest of the country heading into the Great Depression, northern Nevada discovered other industries to carry itself through the down times — industries that forged the area's early character and still carry traces of that past into the present day. Not always socially acceptable, but certainly lucrative, these industries were simple to develop. All the state had to do was legislate activities that were illegal everywhere else. Nevada adopted what became known as "Sin Solutions" — industries not tolerated in other states — including divorce, gambling, and prostitution. These industries groomed this region to become a major entertainment hotspot, becoming the preferred hang out spot for Louis Prima, Jack Benny, all the Big Bands, Marilyn Monroe, and of course, The Rat Pack. Tour "Passion in the Desert" and relive Reno's remarkable heyday from the 1920s up to the 1960s.

Tour 2
Boom or Bust
In 1859 what may be the greatest mineral strike in history was discovered in a mountain to the east of the Sierra Nevada. By the following year, thousands of people swarmed into the surrounding areas where filthy-rich deposits of gold and silver ore laid the foundation for the frontier metropolis of Virginia City. Peoples of every continent sought fortune and livelihood here. "Boom or Bust" will transport travelers back in time to the legendary Comstock era.

Tour 3
Engraved in Stone
5,000 years from now, will we have left behind something worth reading?
The ancients have left the stories of their lives for you to discover. On notepads more permanent than paper, in languages we have yet to learn, people of the past are speaking to us through rock art.
The region surrounding Reno, Sparks and Lake Tahoe is a remarkable time capsule carved and painted on stone. This brochure leads you to some of the most famous sites. As you wander from stone to stone, carving to carving, think of today’s billboards, storefronts, road markers and weather reports. Maybe you’ll recognize how vastly different, and yet how remarkably similar, human communication really is.

Not only that but also found on the www.visitrenotahoe.com are this weeks events, which sound like tons of fun!!

Sep 09 - Sep 11: International Camel & Ostrich Races
Picture
(c)visitrenotahoe.com
Sep 09 - Sep 11: The Great Reno Balloon Race
Picture
(c)visitrenotahoe.com
Sep 14 - Sep 18: National Championship Air Races

How much fun was all of that?!

I hope that it gave you some new ideas (it defintiely gave me some new ideas)  and gave you hope that although a city may not be on one of those "Top City's To Visit" lists.

There is still plenty to do...if you just take the time and do some research! And if you aren't up to it, send a shout out to me or Elisa, I'm sure that we'd be more than happy to help you out!!

As for now, I took my own W2GW advice and we are going to the Tall Ships Festival! I hope to have some great pictures for you tomorrow..
But not only that, but we are also gonna head on over to the local San Antonio annual Fiesta!
Jet, Andrew, Chaplin, Mika, and my mumsy are going, so as I told you before...
Picture
And lastly, the kids rehearsal went well last night, as did my travel meeting. But the most fun and tasty was going to my Favorite SoCal Pizzeria (so glad I finally found one...after all of these years)

PIZZANISTA! They even have Manhattan Special!!!
Picture
Something that unless you know what you are missing - you have no idea.
Something that unless you live in SoCal (or I should say not in NY) you know how difficult it is to find!

Something that if you live in NY, you have no clue how the rest of us suffer!

Now we don't have to suffer :)

Wishing you a great day, but now it's time for me to go!!
