Elisa's Daily Scoop Assateague Island & Wild HorsesHappy Monday!! It's the new week and it appears as if the weather is cooling off as well. I think it's safe to say that we are back in the swing of things with school at this point. I'm also thrilled to say that my girlies (both of them) are eating much healthier. That's always a good feeling as a mom to know that if you give the kids food that is good for them, that they, in fact, eat it! And they've been doing a great job everything I pack them for lunch. This is the healthy breakfast we are all now enjoying each day: Quinoa with fruit, honey & cinnamon and a slice of cinnamon swirl bread with peanut butter and warm water with lemon and honey. This drink gets the digestion going and is very healing as well for good health. A little about yesterday... We took Punkin for her first vet appointment. It had been over a year since we were at the vet - on the sad night when we said goodbye to Liberty. Our return there was much more joyous bringing Punkin to meet the staff, and of course, our favorite veterinarian, Dr. Silverman! Our little fur baby interacted quietly with the other dogs in the waiting area, but was a bit timid. Thankfully, she checked out very healthy and was a hit with the staff. She weighed in at 32 lbs and the consensus was that she probably will probably not hit the 40 lb mark, so she will remain on the smallish size. In any case she is definitely coming out of her shell more and more each day. Every day, her new routine includes regular playtime with her "sisters" Gianna and Kelsey, out in the yard. She runs around like a total maniac at top speed, chasing the ball, wagging her long tail from side to side! I also managed to do a great deal of cooking as well. Since it was Sunday, I made the usual weekly batch of tomato sauce and broke out of the usual "pasta only" meal and added chicken parmesan, which is one of the kiddies' favorites. Unfortunately, Gianna got hit with a bit of a cold, so I was nursing her most of the day with hot lemon water and honey. I'm sure she should feel better by tomorrow, just in time for school lol. Since the weather was so lovely, I took several long walks yesterday, especially after our rather huge dinner! Today, is a bit of a catch up day. Doing more work and organization and hauling around the house. In fact, I need to pack up TONS of books for the Veterans. Luckily, I got a bunch of big boxes from one of the stores at Tanger. All I have to do now is pack all the books in them. I'm also going to be packing up a bunch of Gianna and Kelsey's old toys. This should make a huge difference in both of their rooms as well as the play room. In travel news... I was so excited to tell you about this cool place that I became aware of this past weekend...thanks to my daughter, Gianna. The place is called Assateague Island National Seashore, which is a protected area on a long barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. It’s known for its Atlantic beaches and for trails that wind through marshland, dunes and pine forest. But what makes Assateague Island so very cool is that wild Chincoteague ponies travel the beach near Chincoteague, Virginia & Ocean City, Maryland! Can you imagine! The "wild" horses on Assateague are actually feral animals, meaning that they are descendants of domestic animals that have reverted to a wild state. Local folklore describes the Assateague horses as survivors of a shipwreck off the Virginia coast, though there is no records to confirm this as fact. What is a more probable explanation is that they are the descendants of horses that were brought to barrier islands like Assateague in the late 17th century by mainland owners to avoid fencing laws and taxation of livestock. According to the National Parks Services website: "There are few places in the United States where you can view wild horses. Due to their complex social structure the Assateague horses display a wide range of unique behaviors." This 37-mile long barrier island is located off the eastern coast of Delmarva, a large peninsula on the East Coast of the United States, occupied by most of Delaware and portions of Maryland and Virginia. The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland while the southern third is in Virginia. The Maryland section contains the majority of Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park. The Virginia section contains Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and a small part of the national seashore. It is this area that is best known for its herds of feral horses, pristine beaches, and the Assateague Lighthouse. The island also contains numerous marshes, bays, and coves, including Toms Cove. Visitors can access the island from both Maryland and Virginia, though no road runs the full length of the island. I KNOW MY KIDS WOULD LOVE TO GO HERE! PERHAPS NEXT SUMMER!! How funny is it that Tanya's aunt (my cousin) actually new about Assateague Island and encouraged her to take Cosette. I think I sense another cousins trip in the not to distant future! Check out Tanya's pictures from this weekend - great shots from the LA County Fair!! Well, dear friends, that's it for today!! Have a good one! -E xoxo | Tanya's Daily Scoop |
