W2GW: Martin Luther King, Jr Day Events in SoCal

It's Hump Day, and I think I'm pretty much over the hump when it comes to packing for our trip that leaves TOMORROW! 

I should be all packed by now, but yesterday just got away from me and I didn't have time to finish. So you know what I gotta do today!

Also going on today, is heading to the stables, Dominic's class, and packing for Dave!
He can get in such a bad mood when it's time to pack. I hope I don't meet up with that jewel of an attitude when accomplishing this chore later this evening. 
As it is packing for Dave is going to be a bit more involved than it usually can be, as I will begin packing for our trip to Quebec simultaneously.

Speaking of Quebec, the Winter Carnaval schedule was released yesterday and I am so excited about some of the events that hadn't be listed earlier. Our itinerary is coming along quite nicely!

​Yesterday we went to the stables, but before heading out Cosette realized that she left all of her tack and supplies in a vehicle that we wasn't here and that Dave had at work (up to an hour drive in traffic).

Poor Cosette wasn't too happy about being so forgetful. But that did mean an unscheduled stop at the nearby tack store.

When we pulled up, I saw this cute little guy sitting out front sunbathing. I kid you not when I first laid eyes on him, I thought he was a statue!

Celebrating one of the most historical figures of the civil rights movement, the Peace & Unity Parade. The honorary celebration will continue at 12pm to 6pm for an afternoon of live music and entertainment showcasing visions of peace and brotherhood. There will also be carnival rides and kids activities such as arts and crafts reflecting the spirit of justice. This celebration is a great way to learn more about the local groups and organizations that honor the values of MLK to this day. The celebration also features Dreamland, an entire area dedicated to our youth to uphold the legacy of Dr. King.

Celebrating Martin Luther King in a big way that represents his adage, “Our work is not yet done,” this parade, the largest of its kind in the nation, will do its part to carry on the struggle for equality. All kinds of participants, including inspirational floats and certain celebrities, will herald the life and legacy of this great man as all march down Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Crenshaw Blvd., Western Ave. and Vernon Ave. from 11am to 1pm. The march will be televised.

Between 11am and 4pm on Jan. 18th, the California African American Museum will host a special five-hour commemoration for Martin Luther King. MLK Day will be filled with all kinds of free fun for everyone, including the kids. Expect face painting, arts and crafts, documentaries and even a birthday cake during this fine time to learn and enjoy, all at the same time.

W2GW:  Things to do on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in NYC & Long Island

Good day folks!!

Well, I'm happy to say that I was EXTREMELY productive yesterday!

I got EVERYTHING on my To Do list completed. While there are still a few little things here and there to take care of in my yard and my garage, most of the major work is behind me.

All of the outdoor cushions have been safely put away;  my garage is in much better shape, though, there is still a bit of organizing that needs to be done; and today, I will cover my outdoor furniture until it is unveiled in the Spring!

This coming weekend is a 3-day weekend, as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day.

There are events happening all around NYC and Long Island.  Here are a few of them if you are looking for some things to do with the kiddies or just to commemorate the great contributions of this man!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Historic Harlem Walking Tour
Learn about New York’s links to the civil-rights movement on a special edition of Big Onion’s Historic Harlem Walking Tour. Notable stops along the two-hour trek include the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; the NYC headquarters of the NAACP; and the Harlem Hospital Center, where the reverend was treated in 1958 after being stabbed with a letter opener in a bookstore. Meet at the northwest corner of 135th St and Malcolm X Blvd (Lenox Ave).

Studio Museum in Harlem

Race and Privilege: Exploring MLK's Two Americas
WNYC and Apollo Theater celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. with a panel discussion about the legacies of the civil rights leader and of the systemic racism he sought to erase. Brian Lehrer and Jami Floyd will lead the conversation, with performances by Daniel Bernard Roumain with Special Guests Marc Bamuthi Joseph and Emeline Michel.

Commemorative March
