China Memories
Hey there!!
Well, I can hardly believe that my cuz is leaving for China today! I remember how excited I used to be when I was heading off to Hong Kong and China, several decades ago when I worked in the toy business!! Some of my best memories were from that time in my life and those travel adventures!!! If you haven't as yet read my Throwback Thursday series: ELISA'S THROWBACK: CHINA TRIP ADVENTURE...read more I strongly encourage you to do so before Tanya begins her own adventure tomorrow! My trip was in 1991!!! That is 27 years ago!!! Sooo much has changed and I'm sure my memories of things will never be the experience that Tanya will have this week, in 2018! Having worked in the toy industry for over a decade, my work took me to Hong Kong and China roughly four times per year. I cannot tell you how much I LOVED IT!! Tanya will be visiting Beijing and Shanghai and will be touring the Ming Tombs and The Great Wall of China. Here are a few pics from back in the day from my trip. (Remember, these photos were taken with film!!)
Of course, things were quite different then - Hong Kong was still leased to England; there were no cell phones - only fax and land lines; direct flights between New York and Hong Kong did not exist yet; China was still quite a remote place to visit and "westerners" were still a unique sight for mainland China citizens.
So, I have a bit of a romanticized memory of it all. Who would have thought back then, that I would have a 12-year old learning Mandarin!!! During my visit, there were not many Americans at all touring. Well, as I've said, things have changed. And that's why I'm so excited to see Tanya's pictures!! Not only will the quality be better lol, but I'm sure most things I will not even recognize!!! As for today, I have to take my two kiddos to the orthodontist. I'll also be working on my social calendar for November and December, which I'll share with you tomorrow. Hope it's a great one!!! -Travelin' Elisa xoxo |
Departing for China!
Omg guys! I'm writing to you from the International Terminal at LAX awaiting our flight to China!!!
How very exciting! This trip has been in the works for almost a year and a half and it's finally here. It's really here. We can hardly believe that we are leaving for China...
Cosette and I left the house this morning at 6:30am. With my brother behind the wheel, we were off and heading to pick up Matt - who is coming along for our China adventure.
Traffic was beastly, and I was busy in the back seat taking care of all my bills as we drove up to LA and we made it safe and sound.
We were safe and sound but boy oh boy did Cosette and I have to pee!!! First stop - the Ladies Room. LOL
Once relieved we, it was time to check our bags and head on through security.
And then to the gate.
How I love arriving with enough time to actually sit back and relax without having to run through the airport in a panic.
We have a long day ahead of us, a 14hr flight to Shanghai, then a few hour layover before boarding our second flight to Beijing.
With all of that and a 16hr time difference from the west coast - a 19hr time difference from the east coast (I'm talking USA coasts here), I'm quite curious about if Jet Lag will actually hit me this time around...?
Well we are rather hungry, so I'm gonna bop off here and chow on some of the yums that we picked up from our favorite Monday night stop - Thien Dang - who btw has been awarded a Travelin Cousins Vegan Approved eatery. CONGRATS!
Well guys, the next time you hear from me it'll be a greeting coming from China!
