Bronx Day Re-cap - Bronx Museum Exhibits and Freshly Made EateryHey there!!! Hope you are all doing well! Can you believe it's Thursday already AND the first of November!!! Let me tell you what a fun day I had yesterday! I took a solo drive north to the Bronx for a visit to the Bronx Museum of the Arts and then an impromptu stop at Freshly Made, a Travelin' Cousins Vegan Approved foodie destination. The weather was just lovely and the drive was smooth sailing from Long Island to the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a fun, must-see, intimate city museum. I had never visited it before, but I was intrigued with one of the exhibits that I had read about on the events calendar in ThisIsTheBronx.info. The exhibit is Manuel Mendive: Nature, Spirit & Body and it was very cool and unique. Cuban artist Manuel Mendive has, for the past fifty years, studied the influence of African oral-based traditions on Cuba through the creation of his contemporary art. According to the exhibit, "His multidisciplinary work, in particular performances, has become a vehicle for exploring the intersections between art, religion, philosophy, politics, ethics, and anthropology. " I must say, I'm glad that I came to see this art exhibition before it closes on November 4th. I really liked Mendive's artwork, mostly because of its abstract nature and the calming color palette used in his works. There is also a film on display that captures the performance aspect of his creations. I also had an opportunity to view the small, but enjoyable exhibit entitled, Christopher K. Ho: Aloha to the World at the Don Ho Terrace This solo exhibition, includes a 35-foot tall banner, artifacts from a defunct Hawaiian hotel co-owned by Ho’s grandfather, and signage mimicking the hotel’s grand entrance, I love memorabilia, so enjoyed viewing each of the pieces in the collection, displayed in a glass case. Video of me at The Bronx Museum of the Arts As I mentioned, I also paid a visit to Freshly Made, located on Third Avenue. I first became familiar with this healthy eatery at their pop-up stand at The Bronx Night Market. Their menu includes smoothies, shakes, salads, wraps and paninis - all of which are customizable with ingredients of choice. I was thrilled to see that most of their menu is vegan and as a result, this Bronx foodie destination is now Travelin' Cousins Vegan Approved! Equally important, as I was told by co-owner, Angie is that the neighborhood has embraced Freshly Made, as it has brought healthy, lighter options to the local community. Angie and her business partner, Marielys are residents of the Bronx, both having emigrated from the Dominican Republic as little girls. And although they just opened in March 2018, they have already created a growing, loyal customer base in only seven months. I will be doing two articles on each of these Bronx destinations, respectively, which will be featured in ThisIsTheBronx.info. Stay tuned! As for today, I'm going to be spending the day in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn. Sightseeing and eating will be the major focus!! More on this visit tomorrow!!! Toodles, -Travelin' Elisa xoxo | Halloween Recap & Heading to VegasHello there! Happy Thursday! Happy November! And I am on my way. Off to Vegas I go! *On a side note - do you realize how many times I've attempted to type in "Vegas" and I type "Vegan instead"! lolol Anyhow this morning is a bit crazy with things to do so that I can get out of here. So for now please enjoy a little glimpse of the Halloween Fun that we had last night as 20 of us paraded through the neighborhood dressed as: THE LAND BEFORE TIME- AN ARCHER AND LUCILLE BALL - TOP GUN - ROBINHOOD CLAN - THE REDNECKS - Then it was time to head home and count the candy! As usual it was a family filled fun night. Hope you had a great time! But what is this I'm hearing with a petition to change the date of Halloween?! LAME. I'm definitely not signing that one! I realize that having Halloween on a weekday is not convenient. But guess what - this day has been celebrated for thousands of years and life does not and should not revolve around school and work. Anyhow that's my 2 cents. And now it's time for me to finish throwing a few things into my suitcase and get out of here! See ya in Vegas, -Travelin' Tanya |
