Turtles and Lips

Hiya Everyone!

Guess what...

I'm still the IPC Board President! 

So it'll be another year of putting in countless hours and service to this wonderful non-profit organization that we know and love and that we have been a part of since 2004.
Also which Dominic will be graduating from on June 12th - the day before we leave to go back east.

What a day yesterday was. Whew. It was just non-stop and I didn't even manage being able to squeeze in a trip to the gym. BOO.

I'm heading up to Portland this weekend for some super fun mountain biking and I'm sure that I could use all the conditioning that I could get beforehand - plus we all know that I've got food plans up the KAZOO and will be eating lots - so I better get my butt into the gym today, tomorrow, and everyday before taking off for Portlandia!


Look at what I just found out or maybe I should say what I just realized -  May 23rd (today) is
​World Sea Turtle Day!

I love sea turtles!! They are just soooo darn cute. Not too cuddly. But soooo darn cute!

I've been fortunate enough to have seen these adorable creatures up close and personal on a few occasions while visiting Hawaii..

So of course being the gal and animal lover that I am, I want to share with you a few things about these ancient creatures of the sea.

Sadly many of them are now either vulnerable or endangered.

​Know your sea turtles with this poster, on World Turtle Day (23rd May). There are 7 extant species- the Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill, Flatback, Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridley and the Leatherback Turtle, the Leatherback being the largest and the Kemp's Ridley, the smallest. Sea turtles are found in every ocean in the world, except at the poles. The Flatback Turtle is the only exception, being restricted to the seas around Australia. 

Most sea turtles are endangered or vulnerable, owing to several threats such as hunting, poaching, loss of habitat and nesting sites, pollution, plastic and fishing debris, and getting caught as bycatch by fishing vessels. 

The Defenders of Wildlife published a list of things that we can do to help save sea turtles:

Making a positive difference for sea turtles in your area is as simple as following the  ve easy steps we have outlined below.
1. Turn Out Lights Visible From the Beach!
Sea turtle hatchlings use light and re ections from the moon to  nd their way to the water at night. Arti cial lighting confuses the hatchlings and causes them to head inland instead of out to sea – putting them in dangerous situations which can lead to death. Arti cial lights also discourage adult females from nesting on the beach. Short of turning o  your lights, you can also take measures to shield, redirect and lower the intensity of the lights on your property.
2. Reduce the Amount of Garbage You Produce and Clean Up Trash You See On the Beach.
Sea turtles can become tangled in plastic and trash both on the shore and in the water. Discarded items such as  shing lines, balloons and plastic bags may also be confused for food and eaten by sea turtles, often resulting in injury or death.
3. Be Aware of Sea Turtle Nesting Areas and Avoid Nesting and Hatching Turtles.
Sea turtles are cute, and therefore tempting to touch and observe – but  ashlights and people disturb turtles when they are nesting, or trying to nest, on the beach. Make sure to give nesting areas plenty of space, and do not disturb females as they emerge from the ocean looking for a place to nest. Also be conscious of where nesting areas are so that you can avoid trampling the hatchlings as they head to the water.
4. Reduce the Amount of Chemicals You Use.
The chemicals you use on your lawn and in your home can actually wash into the coastal waters – killing plants and animals. It is very important to properly dispose of toxic chemicals and, even better,  nd alternative products such as biodegradable solutions.
5. Volunteer!
There are countless ways in which you can make a positive di erence in the lives of sea turtles. Organize a clean-up day with your friends and clear the beach of litter, give a presentation to your neighborhood or local school on things they can do to save sea turtles, and most importantly, talk to others about what they can do to make sure they are not putting these important creatures in danger.

We are all here sharing this world together and should each do our part to help keep it preserved and well taken care of. 

And of course as you know I'm still going strong with my love for these lip colors - you do realize that I SELL THEM TOO!
