NEXT TRIP DEPARTS IN: 3 DAYS

These are the Days of my Life

Well folks, we made it back home!

As the saying goes - Better Late Than Never!
Picture
My gang and I woke up on the other side of the world in London, U.K. and strolled into Anaheim Hills, CA at around 9:30p local time.

I think we can all agree that it was a LONG day!

After a leisurely morning and a lovely breakfast, we had hopped on the shuttle to Heathrow and tried our luck at going home.

                   TAKE TWO!

Going through security and getting to our gate was easy peasey.

Boarding was a piece of cake.

Our aircraft awaits (c)travelincousins.com
But then we were in for a big surprise once we found our row...

It was the ONLY row on the plane that had no window!!!!!

And being that it was a full flight, there was pretty much nothing that we could do about it! UGH

Our second unpleasant surprise hit when it came time for lunch to be served...

The special meals that were requested well in advance, confirmed, rechecked, reconfirmed and even confirmed at the gate was NOT on board or even listed for us!!! WTH?!

So needless to say that after watching 2 movies (Atomic Blonde and American Made), as well as almost an entire season of Curb your Enthusiasm...

While the kids had a lovely long (needed) nap.
We were all pretty famished upon our arrival.... Which also happened to be during LA's ever long rush hour!

So it was decided that before heading home that we would stop and have some dinner.
Picture
Once we arrived home, there was a welcome committee and all eagerly awaiting with gifts in hand!

Now that's what I like to come home to!!!!

I was showered with presents and a sweet 2 month old cuddly puppy (who very much looks like a stuffed animal) was placed on my lap!

It seems that about 2 hours before our return that Chaplin received a surprise of her own...

Her very first puppy!

Then after being awake for almost 24 hours, it was time to finally hear my birthday song and eat some cake!!!

More presents came next and then I finally made my way up to bed!

Now as you may or may not have noticed - I have 3 days until I leave the nest once again.

Another Nor'easter & Some Natural Remedies

Picture
Hey Guys!

Well, here we go again.  Another nor'easter is predicted for the east coast.  Crazy weather!

My kids were overjoyed with the news that school was closed today and I'm thinking that if this storm hits the way they are predicting (12"-18" of snow), that tomorrow may well be a snow day as well.

I woke up early today to the sound of hail coming down.  No snow as of this writing, but, it is expected as the day progresses.  In fact, the weather forecast is predicting snow conditions to be in affect through tomorrow (Thursday) morning!

As I made my way downstairs to get myself a glass of water, I was surprised to find my sweet Gianna in the kitchen at 6:15 AM nursing herself with some hot lemon and honey water.  She felt pretty terrible yesterday when she got home from school and apparently, she is not feeling any better.
Picture
In my house, my kids know the drill when they feel a cold or illness coming on -- break out the natural remedies.  She had already taken some Black Elderberry syrup (which we generally try to take as a daily supplement) and was drinking our cure all for anything that ails ya - hot water with lemon and honey.

When mommy got downstairs, I make a mixture of oil of oregano (a few drops) and olive oil (just a little - perhaps 1/8 of a teaspoon), which is a natural antibiotic - and rubbed it on the soles  of her feet.  Why, you may ask?

Well, for the long version, check out this article in The Daily Alternative: 5 Reasons To Put Essential Oils On The Soles Of Your Feet

For the short version --
1) Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants which have proven healing abilities. For thousands of years, cultures across the world, including Ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks, have recognized the therapeutic value of essential oils.

2) Feet soles don't contain sebaceous glands, along with the palms of your hands. Sebum essentially acts as a barrier and therefore impede  the essential oils which you want to absorb into your body. Therefore, applying oils to feet soles allows for absorption and the benefits of their healing abilities.

If I piqued your interest about essential oils, here is another article by DrEricZ.com, Best Essential Oils for Healing: The Top 10 and How to Use Them!
Picture
I highly recommend reading Dr. EricZ's article, but for those of you who are too curious to wait, here is his Top 10 list:
1. Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata)
Clove essential oil commonly used as an antiseptic for oral infections and to kill a wide spectrum of microbes to keep disease at bay.

2. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Globulus)
Eucalyptus is a potent antibacterial, antispasmodic, and antiviral agent. Like clove essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil has a profound effect over Staph infections.

3. Frankincense (Boswellia Carteri, Frereana & Sacra)
frankincense is one of the most viable healing agents on the planet. The journal Oncology Letters published an article late last year that highlights the ability of this Biblical tree to kill cancer cells; specifically the MCF-7 and HS-1 cell lines, which cause breast and other tumors. It has also proven successful in treating issues related to digestion, the immune system, oral health, respiratory concerns and stress/anxiety.

4. Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia)
Lavender is wonderful for accelerating healing time for burns, cuts, stings, and other wounds. It is jam-packed with antioxidant power, as well as known for its soothing and calming properties. Studies have shown that it protects against the increase of blood glucose, thereby a possible treatment for diabetes AND helped induce a decrease in oxidative stress, which is known to cause heart disease.

5. Lemon (Citrus limon)
Lemon stimulates lymph drainage, rejuvenates sluggish, dull skin and is also  a bug repellant. Additionally, it carries useful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

6. Oregano (Origanum vulgare)
Oregano's healing powers are quite impressive and abounding.  In addition to demonstrating the improving effect on performance, changes in
blood count, antibacterial, antifungal and immunomodulating abilities, according to WebMD:

"Oregano is used for respiratory tract disorders such as coughs, asthma, croup, and bronchitis.
It is also used for gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as heartburn and bloating.
Other uses include treating menstrual cramps, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract disorders including urinary tract infections (UTIs), headaches, and heart conditions.
The oil of oregano is taken by mouth for intestinal parasites, allergies, sinus pain, arthritis, cold and flu, swine flu, earaches, and fatigue.
It is applied to the skin for skin conditions
including acne, athlete's foot, oily skin, dandruff, canker sores, warts, ringworm, rosacea, and psoriasis; as well as for insect and spider bites, gum disease, toothaches, muscle pain, and
varicose veins. Oregano oil is also used
topically as an insect repellent."

7. Peppermint (Mentha Piperita)
Peppermint may be the most versatile essential oil in the world. In a recent study, peppermint oil was found to decrease and even reverse the affects of antibiotic resistant bacteria.  In other words, in the future peppermint may be used to treat common cold and flu rather than antibiotics.

8. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
One amazing healing effect of rosemary that many people are unaware of is its ability to normalize blood pressure. Used for centuries to improve everything from memory and brain function to relieving common aches and pains, rosemary even has a history of stimulating hair growth.

9. Sandalwood (Santalum album)
Sandalwood is often used to soothe and heal sore throats.  Additionally,  sandalwood essential oil also has an uncanny ability to inhibit both tyrosinase and cholinesterase, which affects several physiological processes from melanin production to proper nervous system function. Perhaps it can be used to treat Alzheimer's disease.

10. Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
tea tree is one of the healing essential oils with a rich history of use as a local antiseptic for burns and cuts as well to treat a wide spectrum of bacterial and fungal infections (including athletes foot and jock itch).

Nature truly provides for us!! It's amazing.  Just a word of caution - Because essential oils are so potent, you must also dilute the best essential oils in one way or another.
Picture
Dr. EricZ suggests the following methods:
Baths

10 drops mixed with 1/2 cup coconut milk and 1 cup of salt makes a fantastic aromatherapy for circulatory, muscular, respiratory, skin and sleep problems in addition to calming your nerves. Generally, it is advisable to avoid potent oils that could irritate the skin such as lemon, oregano or tea tree; instead, use soothing oils like eucalyptus, lavender, and sandalwood.

Compresses
10 drops per 4 oz. of water. Soak cloth and apply for bruises, infections, aches and pains.
Inhalations: 5 drops in a diffuser or in hot water for sinus or headache relief.

Salves
A 2% dilution is recommended, which is 12 drops per 1 ounce of oil, for relaxation and to alleviate joint/muscle soreness.
Well, you need to stay healthy if you want to travel, see the world and enjoy all of its wonders - natural and man made - so I hope you enjoyed this information today!
