Did someone say FREE DONUTS?!?!

Picture
TGIF and what a fun Foodie Friday this is...
National Donut Day is definitely a day that I can get excited about celebrating!!

For the longest time being a vegan meant no longer indulging in these doughy delights - but those days are LONG gone and vegan donuts are popping up everywhere - all over the country!

And I've had my share ;)

Take a sneak peak sampling at just some of the decadent donut finds that we've scarfed up just in the course of this  past year..

DONUTS DONUTS AND MORE DONUTS!

Now hopefully you didn't stay at home from school or work today, because although it is a National Donut Day, it is not quite a National Holiday. At least not yet.

In other news...
I actually started packing and am close to being finished with Cosette' bag! This is BIG news.

*Still of course need to do the organizing and outfit planning.

I'll hopefully get started on my packing and Dominic's packing today and then on Dave B's packing tomorrow.

While although he isn't leaving until the end of June, it's best we get it done with and for me to help him do it; rather than have him pack on his own - which is a catastrophe waiting to happen!

I've also been working on the food plans for our Cousins Chicago Road and believe to have found some real winners.
I can't wait to share them with Elisa and get her input!!

Alrighty that time has come and my sweet tooth has kicked in.

Catch y'all tomorrow,

HAPPY NATIONAL DONUT DAY!!!

How perfect is it that National Donut Day falls on a Foodie Friday!  Lots of great things to tell you about and enlighten your knowledge of all things donuts.

But, first, can I tell you just how gorgeous the weather has been here on Long Island and the past few days!  Dry and crisp and oh, so sunny! Perfect temps as well - 60's and 70's.

I went for a glorious walk this morning and I cannot tell you how invigorating it felt to have the cool breeze mixed with the warm sunshine hitting me at the same time.  I also managed to accomplish 2-1/2 miles. Not as much as I would have liked, but a good start for the day.

That distance is equivalent to 5200 steps.  I usually like to hit 10,000 steps, but the day is still young!

I know that Tanya is probably going to kill me for beating her to the punch in linking two of her best Donut establishment stories first, but, I know she will link them to her Scoop as well!

You guys know that I'm a "mostly vegetarian" but I do LOVE good vegan food as well.  And here are two amazing Donut Eateries specializing in Vegan Donuts - one on the west coast in Los Angeles, and the other on the east coast in Brooklyn.

You may be asking - what is so great about a vegan donut.  Well, what I can say is that even the biggest carnivore will not deny that the fresh, airy, light consistency of a vegan donut cannot be beat!!
Truly scrumptious.

An overwhelming visit to Donut Friend

DONUTS!!!! Dun Well, Done very well!
Picture
In fact, as I was driving my kids to school this morning and we were chatting about how it's National Donut Day, we started reminiscing about the time we traveled all the way to Brooklyn from Long Island, after school to get us some Donut sundaes at Dun Well Donuts.

Back in 2015 on National Donut Day, Tanya graced our blog with a 15 for 2015 Facts about Donuts.  She also gave her Top 5 for the best Vegan Donut Shops.  Click here for the full Story.
TOP 15 FACTS ABOUT DONUTS
  1. The Glazed Donut is almost three times as popular as any other type of donut.
  2. The doughnut as we know it today, supposedly came to Manhattan under the Dutch name of olykoeks, meaning oily cakes.
  3. The dictionary-approved spelling for the ring-shaped cake made of dough and fried in fat is doughnut. The shortened donut has been around since the late 1800s, but it wasn't popularized until the late 20th century, when the successful American doughnut chain Dunkin' Donutsmade it ubiquitous.
  4. The largest doughnut ever made was an American-style jelly doughnut.  It weighed 1.7 tons (as much as a car) was 16ft wide and 16inches high.  It was made in Utica, New York, USA on January 21, 1993.
  5. In the Middle of World War I, millions of homesick American soliders were served up countless doughnuts by 'Doughnut Girls' women volunteers, trying to give the soldiers a taste of home.
  6. During World War II, Red Cross women otherwise known as Doughnut Dollies passed out hot doughnuts to the solders.
  7. National Doughnut Day was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression, and to honor the work of World War I Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts and other foods for thousands of soldiers.
  8. National Donut Day is always the first Friday in June.
  9. No one quite knows who first thought of using boiling oil to cook pastry, but one story traces it all back to a cow in colonial times, which apparently kicked over a pot of oil onto a mixture of pastry.
  10. Legend has it that dunking donuts became a trend when actress Mae Murray accidentally dropped her donut into a cup of coffee while dining at Lindy's Deli on Broadway in New York City.
  11. At the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, doughnuts weren’t just a popular fad; they were being proclaimed as the “Hit Food of the Century of Progress,” lauded as the perfect union of fresh ingredients and automated preparation.
  12. Boston has one donut shop for every 2,480 people making it the most donut-crazed city in the United States, and Long Beach, Calif., comes in second.
  13. More than 10 Billion Doughnuts are made in the U.S. every year!
  14. Krispy Kreme sells 7.5 million doughnuts per day!
  15. The top donut destination is VooDoo Doughnuts in Portland, Ore.
I actually have a few  questions about donuts:

1. Which Doughnut Retailer sells the most donuts:
Well, according to TheDailyMeal.com, Dunkin' Donuts is the mother of all donut retailers!
Check out The 9 Best Doughnut Chains in America!

2. How many doughnuts are eaten annually in the United States?
Over 10 billion donuts are consumed in the US every year.

According to Statista.com based on the U.S. Census data and Simmons National Consumer Survey (NHCS), 193.39 million Americans consumed donuts / doughnuts in 2016.

Well, it seems like a good day for a doughnut! What do you think?!

The rest of my day is going to be about hanging out with the kids and doing some errands.  They have an early dismissal today, so I'll be picking them up and heading over to town to get some food and then bringing Gianna for her physical therapy appointment.

Enjoy this beautiful day!

-E
xoxo
