The Phillips House, Rockville Centre, Long Island

Good morning my peeps!!

It's hump day and I have to tell you I just can't keep track of what day it is.  With the kids finished with their finals and just getting through the last week or so, it's getting confusing!

So, you know how I am a big proponent of "local travel" and visiting sites in "your own backyard"...

Well, today I was driviHng around to meet my Dad for breakfast and I pass a sign for The Phillips House Museum.  What??? I never knew this place existed. And not far from my home.

There are always little gems all around us to learn about history and the past!

Well, I just added this Museum to my "to visit" list.

The Phillips House is home of the Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre.  The Incorporated Village of Rockville Centre is an upper middle class neighborhood located on the south shore of Long Island...and with much history, I might add!

For example, did you know that the first blood spilled on Long Island in the Revolutionary War took place at DeMott's Mill which was located on Mill River in Rockville Centre?

The museum is opened Saturdays and Sundays 1-4pm or by appointment and is not only a resource of information about the history of this town, but also houses various exhibits throughout the year featuring the artwork of local American artists.

Captain Samuel Phillips

The Phillips House, now a museum, was originally the home of Captain Samuel F. Phillips and was built in 1882.  

Captain Phillips was born in 1832 . He was originally from Maine and lived in Massachusetts before he retired to Rockville Centre at age 50.

He joined a number of other retired sea captains who settled in this area in the 1880's. 

He was among those that signed the documents calling for incorporation of the Village. He was instrumental in the establishment of the first public high school on the south shore of Long Island.

In 1908, Captain Phillips moved out of the house and it fell into disarray.   

In 1975, the house had been a rooming house, when the owner decided he wanted to demolish the house to make way for more parking for the nearby medical buildings.

​An astute real estate broker Edward Clare went to the village with the idea of moving the house and turning it into a museum. The home was purchased for $1, and moved to its present location at 28 Hempstead Avenue.

American Artist Charles Henry Miller's works will be featured at at The Philips House from September 21, 2016-November 10, 2016.

The Phillips House will be presenting the works of noted American Artist Charles Henry Miller. This important artist has been called the “artistic discoverer of Long Island”

The exhibit will run from September 21 through November 10 on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1-4pm. Admission is free.

Today, I'll be heading to the school to attend Gianna's end of year class barbecue.

They certainly got lucky with a gorgeous day filled with sunshine and warm temperatures!!

Eating, running around and playing games...I'm sure it's going to be a great day!

Non-Stop Fun Happening RIGHT HERE!

Hi there!

How's everyone doin'? 

I had a chance to chat with my dad for his birthday yesterday and to a couple of good friends, which is always nice.

I figured that talking to my dad would be full of stories from our wonderful trip to Europe that we just returned from.

But instead he was very excited to share a bucket list item of his own...
Ya see, each and every year he is a big fan of reading and following the lives of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) hikers via their blogs.
Much like what you are doing here following my wacky life! LOL

Anyhow now he wants to hike the JMT!!
The 211 mile John Muir Trail in the High Sierras.
This is no ordinary hike and one that takes much prep and planning. Right now it's set for 2019.

Oh and did I mention that he wants me to go with him?!

I also got to talking to my good friend Jeff.

Me and Jeff

Jeff had actually hiked the JMT a few years back and as the avid hiker and outdoorsman that he is, he claims that the JMT was his #1 hike ever!!

On other note we got to talking about a trip that he is planning for next year to go see the
Full Solar Eclipse - happening here in the USA on August 21st, 2017.

And I'm looking very forward to doing another trip with Jeff.

We've traveled on many a trips together, but due to an injury preventing Jeff from many and most activities he has been laid up and even on bed rest for quite some time.
So I'm all about him coming up with ideas for us to start traveling together again, and already quite excited about his plans for next year!!

And being that it is W2GW (where to go Wednesday), it is the perfect day to share with you some upcoming fun that I'll be participating in over the next couple of weekends -

Let's begin with this coming weekend:

For starters on Saturday we have the highly anticipated Vegan Beer & Food Festival at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

This event happens twice a year, and the first one just took place in Portland, Oregon.
I've never been to either, but I do know lots of peeps who have gone and who have not only had an absolute blast but have also had some amazing foods - this is what I'm looking forward to!!

Vegan Beer and Food Festival features the best of the region's craft beer, wine, ciders, kombucha, cold brew and craft sodas on draft. We curate the top vegan food carts, trucks, vendors and restaurants. Our  "pop up" marketplace showcases vendors selling everything from clothing to ceramics to craft goods. And, of course, great live music from some of the best talent around.

Next up is the Grammy Museum - which is where we are going on Father's Day!

The GRAMMY Museum, is an interactive, educational museum devoted to the history and winners of the Grammy Awards. The Museum strives to inspire its visitors to learn about musical genres and history through interactive touch-screens, videos, and recording booths. The museum also features a rich collection of historical music artifacts including costumes and instruments from the Grammy Awards, hand-written lyrics, records, and audio/video recordings.
Opened in 2008 and although it's been on my list of local places to go, I still haven't been. So I'm pretty stoked to finally have it on the calendar for us to go!

Then we have next weekend, which will be another full one!
For starters my gang is heading to San Diego to get down and dirty in our 4th Gladiator Rock and Run!

The following day we'll find ourselves on the
USS IOWA in Long Beach, CA where the kiddos will be performing and then we'll be touring afterward.

Although we were just there back in February, we had an amazing time and are looking forward to exploring the ship once again and learning more!

And then the following weekend - yet another very full one, we will be heading back down to San Diego to catch the Padres take on my NY Yankees at Petco Park, and then catching the first flight in the morning to Portland for lots of mountain biking fun and plenty of vegan grub!!

So as you can see whether I'm traveling around the world, or staying close to home, there is never a dull moment and always lots going on!
