WTGW in New YorkHowdy! Wednesday already! 
Well, the gray skies and snowy downfall is gone today here on Long Island as I excitedly awoke to to bright sunshine sparkling off the glistening white snow. Great way to start the day right?? Well, it all came to a CRASHING halt when Gianna woke up with a painful store throat and nausea. Sounds like Strep to me, which is just a perfect way to start off the New Year, considering we only just came off of three weeks of illnesses for all three daughters (Gianna, Kelsey AND Rebecca) from late November throughout December. Can I scream now???!! Okay, vent over - so...I get her into the pediatrician first thing this morning. Strep tests are always fun for this particular child as she has an incredible gag reflex, and protests the with great passion, the swabbing of the back of her throat. Of course, I stand clear; shielded from any "reaction", which as occurred on multiple instances. YUCK). Thankfully, we are clear today and get away with some eye tearing and mild gagging. The short term verdict, while we await the return of the culture is negative for strep. Of course, she has a fever (101) and feels horrible. So, honestly, not sure if it's viral or bacterial yet and I'm just treating symptoms at this point. Hoping she will feel better by tomorrow. (poor baby). So, now that I'm homebound for the day, whatever shall I do. Well, it just so happens that I got myself on a roll this week, submitting many of my previously published articles from our Travelin' Cousins site to some very popular travel publications. One of Tanya and my goals for 2015 is to bring a great deal more exposure to our blog, and this is the first step. 
So, illness, snow and general doldrums of winter has not let it escape me that today is, in fact, WTGW (Where to Go Wednesdays, for you newcomers to our site). As I mentioned in my earlier blog this week, I need to fill in January with some interesting local visits. During my search, I came across an intriguing place to visit.

It's the Tenement Museum, located at 97 Orchard Street on the lower east side of Manhattan. To quote directly from their site, "The Tenement Museum preserves and interprets the history of immigration through the personal experiences of the generations of newcomers who settled in and built lives on Manhattan's Lower East Side, America's iconic immigrant neighborhood." As the granddaughter of Italian immigrants, I have to tell you, this caught my attention on a deeply emotional level. Now, I have yet to take this tour, but I have full intentions of doing so by month's end. I had hoped I could steal away one day next week, by myself, as I KNOW, my kids would probably rather kill themselves then join me. (and that would make me want to kill myself!). According to their website, there are a variety of tours available, each of which is about $25, which include: * Tenement Tours * Neighborhood Walking Tours * Workshops * Tenement Talks (free readings, discussions, performances and screening about NY history, people & culture) My goal, is to partake in several of the tours including: * Shop Life * Hard Times * Sweatshop Workers In any case, definitely check our this link. I will absolutely do a feature about this tour as soon as I go! Today is Day 2 of Tanya's Ski Road Trip - don't forget to check in to her blog to catch up on all her traveling fun! A wonderful Wednesday greeting coming to you straight from Lake Tahoe! We are practically staying on the border of California and Nevada, and skiing across both sides of the border today at Heavenly Ski Resort where the views are to die for!! Ever since my first visit to Lake Tahoe, which was 14 years ago, I was sold and I've been coming up here to ski and enjoy natures beauty at least once or twice every winter! On the drive up into Tahoe we had drove past the infamous Bear River Lake Resort of LESSONS FROM A DETOUR, as well as the Kit Carson Lodge (which is located on Kit Carson Road, in Kit Carson, California!!!), we also drove over the Kit Carson River while en-route! The 12-acre resort we passed is named after the trapper and scout. It was built 80 years ago by retired army officer Capt. A.O. Smith along the California Trail [an emigrant trail of about 2,000 miles (3,200 km) across the western half of the North American continent from Missouri River towns to what is now the state of California.] the Emigrant Trail was the path of the American West wagon train and back yard of the Gold Rush of 1849.And part of the California Trail route was discovered and developed by none other than American fur trader Kit Carson! Whereas the river is also named for Kit Carson, who guided John C. Frémont's expedition westward up the Carson Valley and across Carson Pass in winter, 1844. While I'm not sure the name Kit Carson means anything to you, us cousins became very familiar with the legend while in Taos, NM during our New Mexico Road Trip! Arriving in Tahoe yesterday, we made a bee-line and went straight to Kirkwood Ski Resort and immediately hit the slopes! Getting into our groove, getting a good work out and lubricating the ever important knees! It was a beautiful clear day, which was rather special since... Each and every other time that we've been to Kirkwood it has been during a storm and the visibility and weather has pretty much sucked - but this was certainly not the case yesterday. It was just perfect! And best of all, the day was free of all drama! I've gotta say that it was probably the best first day out with the kids EVER! So off we go again! Swoosh Swoosh! Hugs,-T
