Skiing and Slope Safety

After leaving you here yesterday the next part of my day became incredibly FRUSTRATING!!!!

Eeeeesh I was already having ski issues - the top layer of my right ski is totally separating from the base...totally WEIRD and not at all good.

I was able to "Jimmy Rig" the top portion with tape two days ago, but I was outta tape and the bottom portion needed more than just tape. I need to go to the Resort ski shop. So that was the pre-ski plan!

However that was all before knowing or I should say finding out that both Dominic's and Cosette's boots were wet!!!!! Also NOT GOOD.

Back upstairs I went to go blow dry the boots and then the blow dryer continuously had thermal cutout issues - causing it to turn off after let's say between 3-5 seconds of use! UGH UGH UGH

WTH?!

The after much time spent, the boots were finally dry and we were heading to the ski shop where the technician super glued my skis! Ahhhh well, a temporary fix that was at least gonna get me on the mountain.

I obviously need to get this ski repaired once I get home!

Getting out onto the slopes in the most time consuming part of the day...I wish that I could just roll out of bed and onto the slopes!

Now let's talk SAFETY!

Did you realize that there is a
ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE?

There are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities.   Common sense, staying in control and personal awareness can reduce these risks.
Picture
Observe the code and ski and ride with courtesy to others.

  1. Always stay in control. You must be able to stop, or avoid other people or objects.
  2. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
  3. Do not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visable from above.
  4. Before starting downhill or merging onto a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
  5. If you are involved in or witness a collision or accident, you must remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.
  6. Always use proper devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  7. Observe and obey all posted signs and warnings.
  8. Keep off closed trails and closed areas.
  9. You must not use lifts or terrain if your ability is impaired through use of alcohol or drugs.
  10. You must have sufficient physical dexterity, ability, and knowledge to safely load, ride, and unload lifts. If in doubt ask the lift attendant.

Here are some other helpful safety ideas:

Use your senses -

WATCH your surroundings.

And if the sun is out make use of shadows to see what's coming from behind.

Be AWARE.

LISTEN - you can avoid a great number of accidents by hearing them approach and getting out of the way!

Be careful. Watch your speed and be curtious of those around you ESPECIALLY newbies and children!!!

And for you newbies - realize that you are beginners and you should stay on beginner trails UNTIL you are actually ready to move up to the next level.

I see accidents happen pretty much each and every day that I am out there. Ski Patrol coming to the aide of many. And many not being able to ski off the mountain on their own.
Picture

Ambulances and Fire Engines out in the parking lots  taking victims to care facilities.
Skiing and snow boarding are suppose to be fun, but know that they can be dangerous.

Accidents can and still do happen. I'm one talk. Remember this one:
Vegas on Crutches!!

Although yesterday had its frustrations, it turned out to be a GREAY day! The conditions were lovely and we pretty much had the mountain to ourselves (okay so we shared it with a handful of other peeps).

It snowed over night and the freshies are calling so I must go!

See you guys tomorrow,

CURRENTLY ON LONG ISLAND

The Return of The Islanders to Long Island!

Good day to you!!

Wow - Friday is finally upon us!  I don't know about you, but for a "short" week, this has not felt short at all.  All day yesterday I felt like the week was over and today, well, I don't know what I feel.

Anyhoo, I need to be quick today since I'm driving to Farmingdale to CoreLife Eatery, for a very exciting meeting with the new Long Island franchise owners of this visionary eatery.

I'll be doing a full Foodie Friday feature which will be posted next Friday (Jan.26th).  More to come!!
Picture
I wanted to chat with you about about something the other day, but other bits of info took precedence.  What I'm referring to is the plans for the Islanders Hockey team's return to Long Island.

Now, if you are a sports fan, I know this is not new information for you.  But, if you are not up on things sports-wise like your's truly, nor from New York, it may be of interest to you to hear a bit of Islander history and what is happening in the future.
Picture
The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team and are members of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Islanders are one of three NHL franchises in the New York metropolitan area, along with the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers, and their fan base resides primarily on Long Island.

Just a little background, thanks to wiki:
The team was founded in 1972 as part of the NHL's maneuvers to keep a team from rival league World Hockey Association (WHA) out of the newly built Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in suburban Uniondale, New York. After two years of building up the team's roster, they found almost instant success by securing fourteen straight playoff berths starting with their third season.

The Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983, the seventh of eight dynasties recognized by the NHL in its history. Their 19 consecutive playoff series wins between 1980 and 1984 is a feat that remains unparalleled in the history of professional sports.

So, it's safe to say that the Islanders were a big part of Long Island culture for many years!

I'm ashamed to admit, that while I was aware that the Islanders were no longer playing at the Nassau Coliseum, I hadn't really followed their whereabouts until writing an article for my Elisa's Long Island and Travelin' 25 a few weeks ago.  In the article, which is entitled "25 Things to Do on Long Island in the Winter," I thought about what sports events might be happening to enjoy and of course, thought of hockey...and then the Islanders.

Well, it was then and only then (shame on me) that I got familiar with the fact that the team now plays at the Barclay Center (in the borough of Brooklyn). My interest was piqued and within a day, I noticed the newspaper headlines announcing that the team would be "returning" to Long Island, to a brand new arena being built.

Located at the crossroads of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues, Barclays Center is a venue for entertainment and sports events.

Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment manages and controls Barclays Center, the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Islanders business operations.
**Great Hockey Movie: Spotlight** Goon
If you are a hockey fan or just like a good, comedic sports movie, you need to see this film with Liev Schrieber!  It totally epitomizes the expression,
"I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out"
Picture
Considered one of the best hockey movies since the 1977 film Slap Shot, Goon was nominated for three awards at the 1st Canadian Screen Awards:
- Michael Dowse for Achievement In Direction
- Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg (co-writers of Pineapple Express and Superbad) for Best Adapted Screenplay
- Jay Baruchel and Kim Coates, both for Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role.

Last night I watched the sequel, Goon 2: Last of the Enforcers.

Our star, Doug "The Thug" Glatt, is back.  Only this time, a lockout has reunited old teammates and brought a crew of new players to the bench for the Halifax Highlanders. Sidelined after one too many hits and now married with a baby on the way, Doug  hangs up his skates and settles into life as an insurance salesman. But when Doug's nemesis, Anders Cain, is made captain of the Highlanders and new ownership threatens to tear his team apart, Doug is compelled back into action.

More fights on the ice, more blood, and more laughs! Check out the trailer.
The Isles' New Home
Currently, underway is the construction of the Islanders' new planned arena, which will be located at Belmont Park.

The (hopeful) plan is for the new arena to be completed in time for the start of the 2021-22 hockey season.
The problem is that during the next three years, they will need to find a one for three seasons after this one.

Why?  well, according to Newsday, "the Islanders are in the process of opting out of the team's 25-year lease with Barclays Center, which is run by Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which also runs the NYCB Live's Nassau Coliseum.  Under the terms of the opt-out agreement, the Islanders are obligated to play next season at Barclays Center."

Negotiations are currently underway for a plan that includes games at both Nassau Coliseum and Barclays Center, according to Newsday sources.

Interesting stuff - we will see how it all unfolds during the next few years until the new center is complete at Belmont Park!
AMAZING NEWS FLASH!!!!!!
Picture
(c) travelincousins.com
I am so over the moon with the news received yesterday!  Gianna was accepted to her first Catholic School High School choice!  If that wasn't enough, she was also notified that she would be in all-honors classes!! That includes English, World History and Advanced Chemistry!!

But, what we soon found out, via an attached PDF at the bottom of the letter blew mom away!
She received a scholarship as well!!

I cannot tell you how proud I am of my young lady.  It was an amazing evening!  Of course, being nearly 14, she did not want her photo taken for my blog, but I did snag one of the celebration cake I got for her!

On that note, I'm off to meet with the new franchise owners of CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale for my feature next Friday, January 26th.

Happy Friday!!
-E
xoxo
