Adventures in the Snow
Well well well, plans seem to change like the wind on this trip...
First off let me start off with a big
GREETINGS FROM THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS IN COLORADO!
Next let me tell ya about yesterday:
The plan was to head to Vail for our first day of skiing for the 2015-16 season.
*Yea I know, first time this season seems a little late to me too. But who knew that the conditions would be so amazing early in the season back when I was booking our trips and planning our schedule.
So with a nice and early start off we went with plenty of excitement and with Dave behind the wheel. Within minutes we approach the i70 and he asks me if we are going East/West - stupid me says East! UGH
While in some locations this wouldn't be such a big deal; no problemo just take the next exit and get back on going in the current direction.
Well easier said than done out here. We had miles upon miles until the next exit and with the current road conditions Dave was more than a bit of a nervous driver.
We slid and we swerved, losing control and gaining it back. The kids were cracking up in laughter. None of this helped Dave's bundle of nerves.
But we made it to the exit (and lost plenty of time), and once we were on the exit ramp we saw 2 cars stuck in the snow. Bummer.
One of the cars was blocking the road. Dave got out to help push the car and then they were on their merry way.

We continued to exit and then proceeded to find the on ramp to enter the interstate going Westbound.
Well...the on ramp had a bit of an incline to it and at this point Dave wasn't looking too good and the kids (and I) were still finding the humor in the situation and laughing uncontrollably.
Dave wasn't having much luck and then he stopped the truck and said that he can't do this (drive) anymore, so I got in the drivers seat and took the wheel.
However we were officially STUCK!
But not for long. Not for long at all!
Within seconds (it seemed), a good Samaritan had pulled over in front of us and had offered to tow us out off our little mess. There was also a giant tow truck blocking traffic behind us. It's winter driving and just something you come to expect.
Well...the on ramp had a bit of an incline to it and at this point Dave wasn't looking too good and the kids (and I) were still finding the humor in the situation and laughing uncontrollably.
Dave wasn't having much luck and then he stopped the truck and said that he can't do this (drive) anymore, so I got in the drivers seat and took the wheel.

But not for long. Not for long at all!
Within seconds (it seemed), a good Samaritan had pulled over in front of us and had offered to tow us out off our little mess. There was also a giant tow truck blocking traffic behind us. It's winter driving and just something you come to expect.
HERE'S A LITTLE TIDBIT OF USEFUL INFORMATION that I learned last night - if you rent a car/truck in Colorado that has Colorado plates then they will have all-weather tires (good for mud and snow).
However if you rent a car/truck with out of state plates you will get regular tires and something like this can most likely happen to you.
The truck we rented had California plates.
Good thing Dave returned it on his way to the airport this morning!
So to continue with our story, we were back on our way and based on the road conditions Dave was voting for us to go to Keystone rather than Vail, being that it was the closest ski resort. I agreed based on the fact that we had already lost enough time with this ordeal.
However if you rent a car/truck with out of state plates you will get regular tires and something like this can most likely happen to you.

We went to Keystone and had a lovely day on the slopes. At first we found a ton of lines (my bad to book our trip over a holiday weekend), but then we went further back into the resort and to the "Outback" where the conditions were wonderful and the lines were few.

After our day on the slopes with stopped at Red Buffalo once again for some yummy hot drinks and made a couple of other shopping stops before heading back to the condo and calling it a night.
Dave was beyond exhausted, and had an early bedtime, since he had to hit the road by 2:30a.
Yes he was nervous. I stayed awake for his updates until he got through security at the airport.
Poor guy has to go back to work today.
But he will be back to join us for more fun next weekend!
As for me and the kiddos, we will be hitting the slopes again today. I'm thinking either Arapahoe Basin or Keystone again. I just hope that they aren't too crowded since today is MLK Day.
I've really got to remember NOT to book my trips over holiday weekends!!
