CURRENTLY TRAVELING IN: BRECKENRIDGE

The Only Vegan Restaurant in Summit County, Colorado

Picture
Heya! Hi there! (insert wave here)

I am so glad that things have come back to normal over here.    But if you can remember as I was mentioning yesterday - how difficult the love of skiing really is, here is another -

Snow GIVETH - Wind TAKETH away

And that is exactly what has happened these past 2 days. Breckenridge received 15" in the past 72hrs and while that is not HUGE by any means, it really did make for a wonderful POWDER day on Tuesday.
Picture
I had just assumed that there would still be some of the lovely powder left...

Instead however we were faced with a visually beautiful day that was incredibly windy.  Causing it to be cold and causing all of that wonderful powder to be blown off of the runs and the slopes to be all scraped up.

This is not to say that we didn't have a fabulous day out there exploring the Breckenridge ski resort and finding the little secret stashes of powder that was protected by the winds.

After a nice day on the mountain we had decided to head to the village. I had the task of getting Dave's postcard hand cancelled and today was the day to get this done!

The kids were also looking forward to having some more Garlic Knots (along with a few other things) from Piante Pizza.

*Piante Pizza - the ONLY 100% Vegan establishment in Summit County and one that I was looking very forward to featuring in a future FOODIE FRIDAY and sharing with all of our wonderful (vegan) followers just as much trying it out for myself.

But as we all know, as of Saturday night I was STRUCK by a truck called Altitude Sickness, I had no appetite and could barely stand up. Much less manage to walk over to the Main Street location. It was a sad day. Thus the kids and Dave went without me and there was nothing that I could do about it. They raved about the Garlic Knots and how much they enjoyed the pizza.

I just knew that I had to squeeze another visit into our travel schedule.

After enjoying a wonderfully satisfying and delicious meal (stay tuned for my full report on Piante Pizza in a future FOODIE FRIDAY) my little gang took to the streets and began our village stroll.
Picture
I was busy on the lookout for gifts to bring back upon our return to my little Chaplin and little Mika (my nieces - but you SHOULD already know this).

I was only semi successful with this task, although finding another gift for a certain secret someone. Sorry I can't tell...

Then off to the market we went before finally making our way back to the resort.
The kids had wanted to get back to the pool and spa which we did and then called it a night.
Picture
There will be more skiing for us today.

We're just really hoping that the winds have died down and stop blowing us and the snow away!

Until next time,

CURRENTLY ON LONG ISLAND

25 Facts About Black History Month

Hey!!
Well, well, well - is anyone else a little put out by the weather we are experiencing here on Long Island???

Snow yesterday making things slushy and messy in the late morning, then turned to rain in the evening with icy cold this morning!  The kind of days that make you want to just stay bundled up in bed.
Picture
Today is a pretty exciting day for Gianna (and Mom). We will be headed to her new high school, which she starts in the Fall to have her measured for her school uniform and make her course selections for her Freshman year.

Things are moving along so quickly, before I realize it, she will be graduating from her elementary school this June.

Moving right along, as you know, it is currently Black History Month and as such, I'll be visiting the African Museum of Nassau County this Saturday and telling you all about it next Monday (February 12th) in my next feature for Elisa's Long Island and Travelin' 25.

For today, I thought it would be fun to do another Travelin' 25 since we received such great feedback to yesterday's 25 Facts About Scranton, PA.

For today, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the origins and special facts about Black History Month:

25 Facts About
Black History Month
1. The celebration of Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher.

2. Woodson's intention was to raise awareness of Black Americans contributions to civilization by founding the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925.

3. Negro History Week was first celebrated during a week in February 1926 that encompassed the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

4. The primary emphasis of the events was  placed on encouraging the coordinated teaching of the history of American blacks in the nation's public schools.

5. Black History Month was first proposed by black educators and the Black United Students at Kent State University in February 1969. The first celebration of Black History Month took place at Kent State one year later, in February 1970

6.  It became a month-long celebration in 1976 when President Gerald Ford recognized Black History Month, during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial. He urged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."

7. Black History Month was first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1987 in London.

8. In 1995, Canada's House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month and honored Black Canadians and in 2008, the Senate unanimously approved the official recognition of Black History Month.

10. From her humble beginnings, born on a cotton plantation in Louisiana, Madam C.J. Walker is the first American woman to become a self-made millionaire after inventing a line of African-American hair care products in 1905. She established Madame C.J. Walker Laboratories and is also known for her philanthropy.

13. One in four cowboys was Black, despite the stories told in popular books and movies.

14. It is believed that the real “Lone Ranger” was inspired by an African American man named Bass Reeves. Reeves had been born a slave but escaped West during the Civil War where he lived in what was then known as Indian Territory. He eventually became a Deputy U.S. Marshal, was a master of disguise, an expert marksman, had a Native American companion, and rode a silver horse.

15. The earliest recorded protest against slavery was by the Quakers in 1688.

16. Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a real place, so to speak. The home of Josiah Henson, whose life is generally believed to have been an inspiration for the novel, has been restored and added to the National Register of Historic Places in North Bethesda, Maryland.

17. John Brown, the abolitionist was best known for his raid on Harper's Ferry, used his home near Lake Placid, NY as a key stop on the Underground Railroad. He was captured and sentenced to death in 1859, but his New York farm would later become a pilgrimage for abolitionists and is today the John Brown Farm Historic Site  - a National Historic Landmark.

18. Many believe Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat on a bus on December 1, 1955, was the event that sparked the Civil Rights movement.

19. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.

22. Black American Inventor, Lewis H. Latimer played a critical role in the development of the telephone and, as Edison’s chief draftsman, he invented and patented the carbon filament, a significant improvement in the production of the incandescent light bulb. He also oversaw the development of power plants as well as the installation of street lighting, not only here in the United States in many American cities, but also in Montreal and London.

23. Benjamin Banneker was a self-taught astronomer credited as the first African American scientist.  He was also free, a farm owner and  was  appointed by President George Washington to the District of Columbia Commission because of his talent for creating almanacs allowed him to lay out plans and designs for the city.

24. Black celebrities such as actor and director Morgan Freeman and actress Stacey Dash have criticized Black History Month with Freeman saying, "I don't want a Black history month. Black history is American history." Freeman has argued that there was no White History Month, because white people did not want their history relegated to just one month.

25. Louis Armstrong was one of the most influential artists in the history of music, and perfected the improvised jazz solo as we know it.  Affectionately known as "Pops" and "Satchmo," Louis was loved and admired throughout the world.

It's so hard to narrow down Black History Month to just 25 facts, but I hope you enjoyed this list!!

I'm a bit under the weather today - I have an awful headache and think I may have a sinus infection.  I'll be taking lots of elderberry syrup and oil of oregano today!!!

Have a beautiful day!
