Tanya's Daily Scoop CURRENTLY TRAVELING IN: QUEBEC CITY
So many Highlights!!
Today is another COLD and snowy day here in Quebec City!
And like each day preceding, there is much to be done - outdoors. Which I'll get to in tomorrow's SCOOP.
Now I'll tell you all about yesterday -
Although it was FREEZING (waaaay below freezing in fact), yesterday we lucked out with striking blue skies.
While we didn't go to the Carnaval, we continued to explore and to experience a definite HIGHLIGHT of this trip.
A HIGHLIGHT of our lives in fact!
We walked through the HOLY DOOR at Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec!!!
About to enter through the Holy Door
While the Cathedral itself was absolutely gorgeous. Located on this site since 1647, this opulent church featuring a historic crypt, has twice been destroyed by fire throughout the centuries and has been rebuilt a few times.
In 2014 the cathedral celebrated its 350th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, a Holy Door was constructed--the first outside Europe and only the seventh in the world.
Pope Francis’s proclamation of a Holy Year means that the world’s seven Holy Doors will be reopened.
There are only seven Holy Doors in the world. Four are in Rome, in each of the papal basilicas; one in France at the Shrine of Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars; and one at the Shrine of Saint James in Compostela, Spain. And the Holy Door in Quebec City, a gift of the Holy See and the only one outside Europe.
All seven Holy Doors will be open throughout the Jubilee of Mercy.
The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercyis a Roman Catholic period of prayer held from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8), 2015 to the Feast of Christ the King (November 20), 2016. And the tradition of a holy door during a jubilee dates back to the fifteenth century. It is an extraordinary Jubilee because it had not been predetermined long before; usually held every 25 or 50 years, this jubilee however, the Holy Year of Mercy, is an EXTRAORDINARY ONE!
In the words of Pope Francis, “On that day, the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope.” We feel the utmost blessed to have had this Once in a Lifetime experience!
The rest of our day was also quite excellent. We explored Geomania - a absolute treasure chest, offering the largest selection of precious and semi-precious stones in the region. Located in Place-Royale, this store/museum has quite an impressive collection of stones from Québec, as well as national and international gems. Sure you'll find rubies, sapphires, emeralds, pearls, but also a host of other gems you won't find anywhere else. Carrying the finest collection of ammolite, a rare and valuable Canadian gemstone found exclusively in Alberta. Definitely some of the largest examples that I've ever seen!
We also went to admire Québec City from its highest point: the top floor of the Marie-Guyart Building. The Observatoire de la Capitale offers expansive windows with most spectacular views. It was a journey through time at the TOP OF QUEBEC CITY!
The Effigies through the years.
And then while strolling the storybook streets of Vieux Quebec, we had no choice but to stop for MAPLE TAFFY!!! This stuff is AMAZING!
*And although we were so fortunate to have a sampling of it this past summer while visiting a Maple Farm not far from Toronto. It was made over ice rather than snow (and yes I ate well more than my share) but I don't know how to explain it - SNOW makes a world of a difference!
As night fell, and the lights began to twinkle and glow, it was almost time to go over to Vieux Lévis, where we had dinner reservations. C'est Magnifique!
Coming back via ferry, the views were magnificent and hearing the boat crush through the ice was unbelievable!
Lastly, arriving back to our suite I found a lovely bouquet waiting on the table for me!
How very thoughtful and sweet.. A beautiful early Valentine's Bouquet from Dave!
Now I must be on my way, for another full day...
Be sure to read Elisa's column for several Valentine ideas (she's been posting one each day this month!) And it seems that they are getting a little taste of the very COLD wind chill in NY too! Keep warm cuz! One of us should ;)

Red & Sexy
Good morning folks!! As I write this, the sun is brightly shining and it looks gorgeous. Oh, one thing...the temperature here on Long Island is 22 degrees and there is a major Wind Chill advisory in affect until tomorrow (Sunday).
Last night, I took my girls out for a pre-Valentine's dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Season's 52.
By the time we left dinner, we could feel the frigid cold. I felt terrible for the valet guys!!
Today, we will NOT be going to the barn. It is way too cold, but more importantly, the girls will be riding at Winter Camp all next week.
I could really use a day to catch up on household chores and get some errands done.
The girls' good friend Sophia will be coming over today to spend the entire day. I will be making Red Velvet pancakes for lunch for the crew!!
Found this recipe this morning - it looks so DEE-LISH, I couldn't resist!!
This morning, I'm battling it out with my daughters to clean their room and get their weekend homework completed before their play date begins early this afternoon.
