WHERE: Doomies Home Cookin’ and there’s no doom about it.
(Named after the owner, Phil “Doomie” Overdeem)

Walking into to this diner(esque) establishment located in a strip mall not far from Hollywood & Vine, one might initially notice the quirkyness, the black walls with daily specials written brightly in chalk at the top of the walls, and perhaps the somewhat punkster majority of clientele.
You pretty much walk in, seat yourself, and take notice of the bakery case abound with scrumptious sweet goodies!

The servers are always helpful and knowledgeable about the menu.
And if you’re lucky then you walked in already “knowing” about the secret menu and the most popular thing on the secret menu -
The DINOSAUR EGG - it’s a hallowed out dinner roll that is filled with mashed potatoes and their house made cheese, then its wrapped in “bacon”, battered, deep fried and served on top of a pool of chili and country gravy!
And it is just awesome, I mean who comes up with this stuff? I don’t think I would ever this to eat those items on the same plate, much less in the same bite, but one bite of this and BAM you are hooked! Good job guys.

IMO it’s definitely big enough to share…
I mean if you are going to name anything a DINOSAUR EGG, you’d imagine that it has to be pretty big.
But it’s come to the point that when I go there with Dave and the kids, we have no choice but to order 2!

Other things of the secret menu include a vegan BIG MAC! And yes it’s very BIG!

I’ve also heard a rumor that they have something called “super fries” on the secret menu that are a cross between fries and nachos!
While I’m not a big french fry fan, but if I were I only have one thing to say “Be still my heart”!

The soups here are all usually pretty tasty, and if you happen to go on a Friday night you might even score with some New England “Clam” Chowder!

But let this serve as fair warning - this is not typical healthy vegan food, this is american classic diner food. Lots of fried foods and lots of comfort foods. Don’t come here expecting to find even one "good for you" item on the menu. And guess what, the regulars really don’t seem to give a damn!

One dish that they are most famous for is their 'Doomie's' Southern Fried “Chicken” it is finger lickin’ good!
You should probably go ahead and ask for extra napkins when you place your order.

"DRUMSTICK"
Sure it’s a little on the salty side I’m not gonna lie, but if you are anything like me, then you certainly aren’t eating fried food on the daily and just might be in the mood for that crispy salty perfectly fried “drumstick” and then this is the place to go!
The “Chicken” even has skin!
While I’ve busted the code of their secret, I’m not gonna spill the beans and I’ll just leave it to you to figure out how this “Chicken” has skin!!!

Last time we ate there, I was actually rather surprised by the “Chicken” Parmesan over linguine -
I’m a total pasta snob and there is no way that I would take the chance at ordering this.
But Dominic did, and I took the risk and had a bite. To my surprise, the sauce was pretty tasty and the pasta was actually al dente! (I was expecting mush)

DIGGING IN

From appetizers and soups, to salads, burgers, and sandwiches, to their dinner entrees and decadent desserts, if you are in the mood for this type of food I’m sure that you’ll find something that’ll float your boat and that you’ll be happy with.

This too is also the perfect place to introduce some of you meat eating friends to the “boring” ways a vegan eats!

And before you leave, don’t forget to grab a creme brûlée or deep fried oreos!
I’m usually too full by dessert time, but I don’t mind taking something to go!
I also make sure that I take a few croissants for the road (they have some of the BEST vegan croissants found anywhere!).
