My ever growing list of restaurants to try started getting a bit out of control (which is not a bad thing - just means that more and more Vegan establishments are opening all over the place).
One restaurant that had been on my list for a while was Sun Cafe, up in Studio City, CA.
While French Onion soup use to be a favorite, that was years and years ago, and I haven't seen it on a vegan menu since...well - EVER!
My mouth was watering at the idea.
We arrived at the cafe which to my surprise was apparently a renovated home, and still had somewhat of a homey feel (but not in a bad way).
We were welcomed and then brought to our table. I had taken in the atmosphere and was kinda diggin' the place.
Of course being in the location that it is, you can imagine all of the actor and actress "types" that walked in and out of the place - I'm not much a fan when your nose is stuck in the air.
So I'd say that the flavors were definitely absolutely spot on and I could not wait to taste the food!
Of course I went with ordering the French Onion Soup (all 3 of us did), I also got an order of Mac and Cheese (actually the 2 of us went for this menu item).
When the bowls of soup were brought out to us they looked quite yummy, but not quite what I had expected - ooey gooey cheese (albeit vegan cheese) melted over a crusty slice of fresh French bread.
Well that was a bust.
But I'll be the first to tell you that for me looks don't really count for too much - it's what the food tastes like that will either make or break the meal for me.
So after taking my pics, I went in for a bite... And it was okay, I mean it was good enough that I finished it. However upon my next visit I would opt to order something different. Catch my drift. And the novelty of having French Onion soup had past. I think I should just make this one at home.
With that being said I thoroughly enjoyed this dish - as did each of us!!
It was quite good and I would totally order it again. In fact I'd probably have a hard time wanting to order a different entree - it was actually very tasty and I did not have a problem with the texture.
The desserts available were all raw and of course gluten free, but I went for it anyway.
We ordered the Raw Pistachio Ice Cream Sandwich and a Key Lime Pie Cheesecake.
But by this point I had already ate too much and couldn't eat anymore, so of course I took it to-go and finished it off as dessert the following night. It was still yummy!
All in all the verdict is that I would go back, I just would skip the French Onion Soup - which ironically enough was the main draw for trying this restaurant in the first place!
In my book every meal counts, so make each bite worth it!
