There is just something so elegant and upscale about Lincoln Center and the surrounding area on the upper west side of New York City. So it comes as no surprise that The Leopard at Des Artistes is situated in this center of art and culture.
Searching for a place to dine for a pre-Opera dinner with my husband, I was intrigued by not only the creative and varied menu, but also the story behind the building within which The Leopard is located.
Hotel des Artistes is between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, a two block walk to Lincoln Center. This neo-classic building was designed by George Mort Pollard, in 1918 and was originally a “studio” building designed as an artist’s cooperative apartment complex. Though the name would indicate otherwise, it was never a hotel.
Among the famous individuals who called Hotel des Artists home, were such talents as Isadora Duncan, the dancer, Noel Coward, the playwright, writer Fannie Hurst, who had a very large triplex penthouse, New York City Mayor John V. Lindsay, writer Alexander Woollcott, and Norman Rockwell, the artist.
For an upscale restaurant, the ambience is relaxed with clean-line decor that includes restored famous murals. The menu was extensive and creative! The food more than lived up to my expectations when booking the reservation. I started with an appetizer of Baked Fennel with Parmesan Cheese. It was crisp and the cheese was cooked to perfection on top.
For my main course, I had the Ravioli filled with braised artichoke and burrata cheese, in light tomato-marjoram sauce. It was so light and savory, but certainly filling.

My only regret is that we got off to a late start heading into the city and as a result, did not have the luxury of time. We were forced to skip dessert - truly a disappointment for me!! But, the meal itself, more than made up for the lack of sweets. Our waiter was so concerned with us having something sweet before leaving, that he brought us over a lovely little plate of biscotti and cookies before we headed out to our performance of Ernani.
