We stayed in an absolutely exquisite private apartment in the diplomatic district, where the hostess provided us with a full travel guide for both sightseeing and dining. A special note was made about a place called Pan & Wien being one of the best Italian restaurants in Vienna. So, I immediately put it on our list of places to eat. After three full days of early rising, walking and site seeing in Vienna (which came after three days of the same in Prague), the kids staged a revolt and refused to get out of bed to go anywhere. They were tired and wanted to stay in the apartment, rest and play on their IPods. At first, I insisted they get going since I had an itinerary to keep. Then I realized, I was tired too and we could all use a nice, calm day with no agenda. It was a great idea! I decided that the highlight of our day would be a nice late afternoon meal. After mapquesting the location of Pan e Wien, I was delighted to find out it was around the corner from our apartment! Cool beans!
The restaurant is very understated on the exterior and the inside is intimate with an upscale decor. At the time we went, it was past lunch, but still too early for dinner, so as it turned out, by the time we ordered, we were the only ones in the restaurant and had the whole place to ourselves. The waiter was quite friendly as we took our usual forever, ordering, explaining every last detail of the menu to the kids and helping them to decide what to eat. Normally, I would crop the photograph and cut out the peripheral top, but I purposely left it in to enable a glimpse of our waiter, camera in tow, taking our picture.
A rare occurrence in my family is when everyone is happy with their meal, but that was precisely the case on this day. In fact, it was actually a very enjoyable and peaceful dining experience with no yelling, fighting or crying either!
As I mentioned I did not pass up dessert throughout this entire trip, and this meal was no exception. Kelsey and I decided to share a dessert (of which I definitely ate more!) and ordered the Lemon Cake with Raspberrry sorbet. It was light and fluffy and the citrus flavor of the cake complemented the sweet, tangy coldness of the sorbet. Gianna went with chocolate and ordered the Chocolate Mousse which was accompanied with a side of rhubarb. The mousse had a wonderful texture, almost a like a gelato. Of course, I partook in some of this sweet dish as well, all while sipping my hot cappuccino! Tedd got his usual espresso, but passed on the sweets.
