Perhaps one of the most underappreciated destinations, Mozambique, located in Southeast Africa, still remains to be one of the world’s hidden gems. Colonized by the Portuguese, lived under their rule for more than 4 centuries, descended into a civil war which lasted for 15 years...It is no wonder that this war-torn country is not one of the most attractive or popular touristic destinations. But still, Mozambique treasures one of the most astonishing natural beauties (un)known to this world. And here you can see why this South African nation is called The Rising Star of Africa:

If you wish to step foot on some of the most mesmerizing beach resorts, get a proper insight in Mozambique’s historical heritage or simply absorb its rich culture, do not hesitate to sail to some of the most amazing islands which surround this country. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of six islands near the city Vilankulo. Among these, you might stumble upon the rocky gem comprised of coral reefs and deep channels known as Santa Carolina and also sometimes referred to as Paradise Island. But if you prefer sandy beaches, savannahs and an abundance of freshwater lakes then Bazaruto Island and Benguerra Island are better options.

Of course, the best way to get acquainted with a place and get to know its essence is to get lost in the rural areas, small towns and local villages. Pack your backpack and start exploring the untouched nature of Mozambique, its local people and their traditions. Find some secluded villages unknown to tourists and spend a day wandering around, simply observing the lives of these locals. This is where the true magic lies. I managed to take some amazing sunrise pictures during my stay. Those photos speak a thousand words!

With its 2500 km coastline, mesmerizing beaches, white sand, coral reefs and translucent water, Mozambique offers a great deal of pristine diving sites. If you are a diving or a snorkeling enthusiast, then do not miss the magic of Tofo, Pemba or Matemo Island. If you are looking for a more luxurious setting, then Medjumbe Private Island with its untouched corals, this tiny island represents one of the best diving spots in the world.

Taking in consideration that the country’s economy is mainly based on agriculture, producing all sorts of foods and beverages, you can only imagine what kind of exotic and tropical dishes you might find here. If you wish to go back to the roots and eat traditional local foods then you simply must try ncima, a thick porridge made from corn flour. Also, cassava, rice, vegetables, fish and beans represent some of their daily nutrition. But for a more exotic approach, prawns, peri peri chicken, paõ and matapa will certainly leave you craving more. When it comes to beverages, you have to taste their delicious coffee.

The vibrant mix of African, Portuguese and Arab cultures is present everywhere in Mozambique. In this country, people speak more than 40 languages and dialects belonging to the Bantu family, but to this day, because of its colonization, Portuguese remains as the only official language here. Still many of the local customs are still practiced to this day, from ceremonial dances in lion skin called the hunting dance of the Chopi, tofu dance of the Mozambique Island and also nyanga, a common dance where the dancer sings and plays the panpipes. In northern Mozambique you might find Makondo people who are most famous for their mapiko dance, but also their arts and crafts, especially wooden sculptures.
Perhaps still unknown to many, Mozambique is truly a heavenly place. Combing and blending different cultural aspects, religion, mesmerizing wilderness and the horrid history into a place so tranquil and full of harmony. Surely a place like no other.
