Australia is a vast country, greater in size than many first-time visitors anticipate when planning their stay.  Understanding the enormity of this continent, will prevent travelers from spending their days watching a desolate red-stone desert from a tour bus, just because they thought: “Oh, what the hell, it can’t be that big”. Bear in mind, that Australia has a cattle station the size of Belgium. With this in mind, a visit down-under should begin with a wish list of sights and destinations for a well thought out itinerary.

Additionally, as an isolated giant, Australia sits at the world’s end with less accessibility from a great many places from which travelers are coming.  As such, it may be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and with time often being a commodity, it is wise to decide in advance to concentrate your efforts on one or two key regions to get as much as possible out of an Australian trip.

Rather than trying to see it all, travelers should instead reflect on the type of vacation that is most suitable. Asking oneself whether a visit to the vibrant cities or the cozy countryside is their ideal or is there a craving for  a refreshing sea breeze or unnamed outback? With more than 10,000 beaches on a 50,000 km coastline to choose from, narrowing down the options will make a big difference.

Wild frontier
So what are these options?  It seems that Mother Nature as blessed Australia with a plethora of natural resources making travel options immense.  From ancient rain forests to stunning coral reefs, towering mountains and rich wildlife.

If a seaside vacation is your pleasure, consider learning to surf on the Gold Coast or swim with the dolphins. Australia’s heartland - the outback is something special with is dramatic landscapes and surreal vastness and begs the question, “am I still on planet Earth?”  Riding a horse under the night desert sky, and sharing stories around the campfire is something you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Up for a real adventure? Indigenous Australian culture is a profound experience. Aborigines have been around since the dawn of time, and their culture is one of the oldest and most unique ones. Hear their myths from days long past, witness the eternal dance and music, and become part of their ancestral traditions. Local guides can tell you about the Dreamtime, or teach you about bush survival skills. You never know when you might need those, it’s Australia after all.

Red, red wine
On the Australia’s east coast,  the major metropolises of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane all have something unique to offer. Visit the famous Opera House in Sydney or watch the Hobart Yacht Race in one of the world’s biggest harbors. On the West lies Perth, one of the most isolated big cities, and the choice of many tourists. There are noteworthy music festivals to check out, and major sporting events such as the Australian Open and Formula 1 Grand Prix.

If wine floats your boat, Australia has some top-notch wine regions, and most of them are located in the South. Take a majestic trip through places like Barossa Valley and sip the top-quality sweet red wine. Where there’s good wine, there’s some delicious food as well. And this region lends itself to every taste. Exotic seafood, kangaroo steak, organic vegetables, and sublime cheese are a few of the culinary options.

The indigenous cosine is worth checking out as well. There are around 5000 different types of native food,  about 20% of all Australian flora and fauna. They are all ecologically sound, due to thousands of years of getting used to Australian climate. Vegetables and fruits are hung on the trees in bags, while being specially processed to keep the toxins out. Other that vegetables, meat is usually cooked on an open fire, and the varieties include emu, crocodile and eel meat, and of course, the widely spread kangaroo meat.

The land down under
From adorable koalas to saltwater crocodiles, and cruel deserts to tame countryside, Australia will leave you enthralled. There are many breathtaking landmarks, and a myriad of activities and regions to choose from. Go on a kayaking expedition, soak in the urban culture of major cities, or feel the extraordinary wildlife of national parks. Whatever you do, just don’t leave it to chance. Rewarding travel experience comes to those who plan ahead. At least that’s the case down under in Australia, you know.
