Another delightful day spent in the Bronx - this week I had the pleasure of visiting Bronx Community College (BCC) and the photography exhibition of Marisol Diaz-Gordon.

Her  exhibition, 25: A Retrospective” for which I interviewed Ms Díaz-Gordon for my article last Friday prior to its opening (Photojournalist Marisol Diaz-Gordon Celebrates 25 Years), was met with great excitement last Friday at its opening, welcoming an enthusiastic large crowd of faculty, students, friends and associates of the artist that included News and photographer professionals.

I had the absolute pleasure of getting up close and personal with this photographer, whose images adorn the walls exhibition room at Bliss Hall on the Campus of BBC.

This was my first visit to BBC and wow, was I delighted by this city campus.  As I made my way through the grounds, I couldn't help but stop along the way to admire and photograph the impressive architecture of the buildings and lovely, open green spaces.  But, I digress.

Arriving a few minutes early than Diaz-Gordon, I had the whole room to myself -  the silver lining to missing opening day! I scanned the room, taking it all in, then proceeded to look closely at each artistic image, piece by piece, wall by wall and feeling drawn into the emotion radiating from the individual images.

With a career that spans more than two decades, Díaz Gordon’s photography archives is quite extensive and robust, portraying a wide array of subject matters and capturing a vast array of moods.

Her works include both black and white as well vibrant color pieces, each exuding a unique personality and charisma. From somber and touching, as is the case with her “Unsung Hero’s” firefighter series to fun and lighthearted snapshots of everyday people in distinct settings, to poignant images as is the case with her  photos of Tuskegee Airman, Dr. Roscoe Brown, taken in 2012.

I was pretty fascinated, to say the least, hearing all about how Diaz-Gordon had the opportunity to meet Dr. Brown at his home in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, to photograph him, along with his collection of memorabilia and his coveted Congressional Gold Medal.

A total of 40 images are on display until the end of the month, along with several photo albums and newspapers available to browse through with more of this artist’s photographic images.

On a personal note, I found it quite heartwarming that Ms. Diaz-Gordon was asked to be part of BCC's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration as an alum to commemorate her 25th anniversary!  I am profoundly positive that we will be hearing a great deal more from this Bronx photographer in the coming twenty-five years!
