Great Hikes around Sedona

Happy Throwback Thursday! Only one week until Thanksgiving...Did I miss anything?

Okay I'm gonna give you a quick overview of the hikes we did yesterday...but at this point I'm sorry that I don't really have much time to tell you much more.

We started off with:
MUNDS WAGON TRAIL -
This historic trail follows one of the first and most popular cattle trails out of the Sedona area. Upgrading of the trail began in 1896, but its completion as a wagon trail awaited the work of pioneer J.J. Thompson, funded by Coconino County, in 1902. It was known as the Munds Road and later as the Schnebly Hill Road.

Had a great time, though at first we lost the trail a bit, and then during this hike Cosette continually asked "how much longer"? ugh

Then back to the resort for lunch before we were off again and this time we headed out to...

THE TEACUP TRAIL -
The scenic trail passes under Coffeepot Rock along the massive red rock cliffs fronting the north edge of Sedona. Along the trail you also skirt Devil’s Kitchen sinkhole.

We also walked right past this sinkhole without even knowing anything about it - but now we do:

THE DEVILS KITCHEN SINKHOLE -
The schematic cross section shows that the top portion of the Devils Kitchen sinkhole is at an approximate elevation of 4510 feet above sea level.

Unlike typical karst topography the outcrops in the immediate vicinity of the Devils Kitchen sinkhole contains no limestone. The walls of the collapse area contain massive [Schnebly Hill] sandstone in the upper walls and a much weaker [Hermit Formation] shaly siltstone in the undercut lowest portions of the sinkhole walls. This sinkhole, as well as the similar Devils Dining Room to the south of Sedona is formed as the result of deep-seated collapse of Redwall Limestone caves at depth.

This shows how a sinkhole may develop. Part A shows a limestone cave beneath a cover of sandstone, much the same as seen at the Devils Kitchen area. Part B shows that as the cave got too large to support the roof rocks it began to cave in the overlying strata. The broken rock which occupies the enlarging cavity is called breccia. Part C show how the upward-stoping collapse finally breaches through the surface.

We watched a beautiful sunset on our way back and then picked up some yummy and decadent gourmet chocolates and had a lovely Hot Cocoa Chai from Lulu's - all vegan Chocolate Lounge that I had read about.

Of course there was more but at this point we've gotta run, do some more hiking, go on a jeep tour, catch another amazing sunset and so forth...

Ever since our first visit to Sedona back in 2005, we loved it here so much that we've made it a regular return location and just keep coming back!
