NEXT TRIP DEPARTS IN: 93 DAYS

North Vs South Lake Tahoe

Howdy, Howdy Howdy!!

Well, what a way to jump right back into being home.  Yesterday, was a crazy day.

First, I had to work things out so the girls could get a ride to the barn for their weekly day of riding, since i had to attend a funeral service.

As I was leaving my house to head out to the funeral, the snow started coming down like the dickens.
Picture
VIEW FROM MY CAR AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN A MAIN STREET YESTERDAY (c)travelincousins.com

Now, my plan was to do two things after the funeral service. First, head over to the vet where Punkin was being boarded during our Florida trip and pick up my baby!!  Then get on the road to Manorville to Dream Come True Farm to get my girlies (with Punkin in tow!) and then bring them home.

Well, as I began the drive to the funeral mass, and saw how the snow was accumulating fast, I contacted Tedd (the girls' father) to see if he would mind drivng them back to Nassau, as he lives out in Remsenburg now.

Thankfully, he was very cooperative and kindly drove them all the way back (in the snow storm), only to have to turn around and head back.

It was clearly a life saver, because by the time the funeral ended and I battled the snow from the north shore of Nassau back home, they were already waiting for me in the driveway.

I mean, could you jump into the bowels of Winter anymore than this after coming from the Florida tropics!!! LOL!

Well, let's move onto some travel talk...

As you know by now, Tanya is enjoying her third day in Lake Tahoe for some good old Winter fun and Skiing...and shopping!  Hopefully, you caught yesterday's blog about the shopping opportunities throughout the Tahoe area!

So, today, we thought we would chat about the points of differences between North and South Tahoe.
Picture
I guess to sum it up simply, probably the biggest difference between the two areas is that the South is characterized by being more of touristy and party scene, whereas the North has a bit more of a quiet, and nature oriented scene.

There is no "better" location - it all depends on what your preference is and what you are looking to do and get from your visit.

EMERALD BAY IN SOUTH TAHOE - SERENE AND QUIET (c)7x7.com
South Tahoe
Let's first take a look at the South Lake Tahoe which include the areas Meyers, Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Emerald Bay, Homewood, Kirkwood, Tahoma and the Heavenly ski area.

If partying is your thing, then South Tahoe has a great many options for you. The casinos and bars of Stateline and South Lake Tahoe attracts big crowds with lots of events and nightlife, as well as after hours clubs.

Now haviang said this, ironically, one of the most beautiful and serence places in all of Tahoe, particularly in the Winter, with very few people is Head to Emerald Bay on the South Shore.

Emerald Bay is the most popular place on the lake during the summer.  Accoridng to 7x7.com, it's a good idea to bring your snowshoes to hike down to the Vikingsholm Castle as it possesses scenic views   of Fannette Island.

Picture
INCLINE VILLAGE NORTH TAHOE (c)lakeshorerealty.com
North Tahoe
The North Shore is comprised of Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach, Incline Village (WHERE TANYA IS STAYING, THIS TRIP), Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Diamond Peak, the Mount Rose ski area and Truckee and Donner Lake.

Each of these small communities and resorts have their own unique style as well as things to do.  Accommodations are plentiful in each as well as great eateries.  It's all a matter of personal preference as to which one is best suited for you.

If you are seeking to get away from the crowds and relax peacefully, then North Tahoe is probably a better choice for you.

According to 7x7.com, "Incline Village or the communities of Tahoe Vista and Carnelian Bay. While Truckee can be really busy this time of year, Donner Lake is quiet. Stay at the Donner Lake Village Resort where you can get a room or studio right on the water. In Carnelian Bay, stay at the cozy Cedar Glen Lodge and enjoy their hot tub, sauna or outdoor fire pit. For breakfast, get to the Old Post Office Café early to avoid the crowds."

You are also bound to meet more locals in the North as well.

Check out Tanya's blog for more indepth  look at her day in North Tahoe.

Well, it was wonderful having my fur baby back with me last night!!  She cuddled up on the bed with me, as usual and it made being back in cold, gray, New York, that much more bearable!

Today, started off with lots to do.  Had to shovel away the snow that had accumulated - which was roughly about eight inches.

I will admit, it certainly does look lovely covering the trees and making everything white!

Punkin had a blast romping and running at top speed through dthe snow-covered backyard.

The rest of my day is filled with laundry, running errands to Staples (it seems like we are ALWAYS running out of ink), Stop & Shop to fill the fridge and pantry, and Ace Hardware to pick up a bag of salt to avoid the wet spots turning icey overnight.

Here's wishing you a terrific Sunday!!

See ya back here tomorrow - boy, do I have LOTS to do this week, which I'll be sharing with you tomorrow!!

-E
xoxo

Tanya's Daily Scoop
CURRENTLY TRAVELING IN: LAKE TAHOE

It's raining, it's pouring, it's suppse to be snowing

GREETINGS once again from Lake Tahoe.

Eeeeeesh what a day!

Well here we are on our first ski trip of the season. Super stoked that the region received an additional 74" of snow the week and just days prior to our arrival. And with another 50-75" of snow on the horizon. But no yet because...

It appears that we brought the rain to Lake Tahoe. Shhhh don't tell anyone that we are to credit...or blame for this mess!

While I absolutely love love love the rain, I really find no place for it on a ski trip. It makes for absloutely dreadful and unsafe conditions.

Plus based on the fact that both ski accidents that took me out for months and that have caused me to have a "trick knee" and to be über careful about certain sports are thanks to skiing in THIS type of crappy weather - once is Whistler, BC and the other at Canyons Ski Resort in Park City, Utah.

So thanks, but no thanks.

And based on the amount of rain even the ski resorts have opted to close for the day.

So the streets in Tahoe - both North and South are gonna be packed full of worldwide travelers who came for the epic beauty and awesome skiing and just can't hit the slopes today.

What are we all gonna do?!

Go figure that we are here when the ski resorts close based on poor weather conditions. A very rare occurance. And we also happened to be in Orlando when Hurricane Matthew hit and closed all of the amusement parks - including Disney World - which pretty much never happens.

Dealing with Hurricane Matthew

Being that we couldn't hit the slopes yesterday, I decided that we should still venture out and that we'd go to the beach instead!

Off to Incline Beach we went!

At first we just sat in the car watching the violent waves crash upon the snow dappled sand. The wind was blowing and it was almost intimidating to exit the vehicle.
Picture

But we did it. We had to do it (I guess we really didn't have to but it just sounds better to say it).
We got pelted by the rain and most of our umbrellas had given up very quickly, leaving us to get wet.

Then after a while of being wet, cold and having our hands begin to freeze, it was time to go. And off we went to The Potlatch.

And as lovely as a store it is Dave was on the hunt for the first post card of the year and we soon found out that the store has phased out post cards. BOO HISS

We were then on the hunt and after a few more stops we finally found one that is suitable. Not perfect, but suitable.

DID YOU KNOW:
Lake Tahoe is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. It has 72 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 191 square miles. With an average surface elevation of 6,225 feet above sea level, Tahoe is the highest lake of its size in the United States.

Due to its elevation and the coldness of its water, Tahoe enjoys unrivaled clarity. Objects can be seen up to 100 feet below its surface. An average of 1,400,000 tons of water (or one-tenth of an inch) evaporates off the lake every day - enough to supply the daily water requirements of 3,500,000 people. If Tahoe were emptied out onto California , it would cover the entire state with nearly 14 inches of water.

That is pretty crazy!!

Well, I'm gonna go and enjoy the rain for the next few hours before it finally starts to snow, and hopefully we'll be able to hit the slopes by tomorrow.

And just so you know our rooming situation has all been straightened out and we are much more comfortable now.

Also due to all of the rain the Governor of Nevada (we are in Nevada) Brian Sandoval has declared a State of Emergency for many nearby counties due to massive flooding. What a mess huh?!

I'll be driving into that mess super early tomorrow morning in order to drive Dave to the Reno International Airport and get him back to OC and back to work. Poor guy came up for a ski trip and never even got to put on his boots.

C'est la vie,
-T
