Love Letters on Broadway

A bare stage, no scenery, and a table with two chairs, Love Letters features the talent of award-winning actors reading aloud alternatively for ninety minutes.  Seated the entire duration, dependent completely upon facial expressions and voice inflections, this stage production was poinniant and palpable with emotions running the gamut from A to Z.

The storyline is a lifetime of shared friendship, emotions, narrative and love through the penned art of letter writing to one another.  In a series of cast changes throughout its Broadway run since September, Love Letters has and will star veteran actor pairings such as Mia Farrow and Brian Dennehy, Anjelica Huston and Martin Sheen and Stacy Keach and Diana Rigg.  Today's production featured Alan Alda and Candice Bergen, who's performances  were charming and emotionally-riveting.

I attended the show solo, as my sister cancelled last minute, which was a new experience for me.  I must say, if there was ever a show that lent itself to watching alone, this drama was it.  Comprised of rich dialog, both serious and humorous, the audience learns of each of these characters' enduring love for one another, as their life paths take them in different directions over a fifty year period.

Evoking hardy laughter and profound sadness and tears for me, I watched as these characters' lives passed before my eyes through written correspondence beginning in childhood and into their late adult years, and was struck by their mutual unhappiness and profound love for one another.

The performances of Ms. Bergen and Mr. Alda were moving and I found myself captivated for the full 90 minutes.

Having not seen a drama in a while, Love Letters was a nice change of pace and I recommend catching one of the performances during its Broadway run through February 15, 2015.
