Woke up to a gorgeous, sunny day here on Long Island and the first thing I did was to wish my dear cousin, Tanya a Happy, Happy Birthday!!
As you may have figured out already, we take birthdays very seriously here on T.C. - Everyone's!!
Today is no different, in fact, it's extra special since it's one of my most favorite people in the world's birthday...!
MY COUSIN TANYA!!!
In celebration of Tanya's 42nd Big Day, I want to pay tribute to some of the greatest moments spent together!!
But, first, let me remind you of our humble "adult" relationship beginnings. Having a family rift that latest well over 30 years, Tanya and I last saw each other when she was about eight years old and I was eighteen. It wasn't until the wonders of social media (FaceBook, most specifically) that we reunited, thanks to my sister, Danielle. Read More.

CHINA: LONG NOODLES FOR LONGEVITY Eating a plate of long noodles is a Chinese birthday tradition, which represents longevity by slurping the noodles in as far as possible before biting.
ENGLAND: FORTUNE TELLING CAKES & "BUMPS" The birthday cake is prepared containing symbolic items. For example, if your piece of cake has a coin in it, then you will be rich. Additionally, the birthday child is given "bumps" by their friends - lifted into the air by the hands and feet and raised up and down to the floor, one for each year then one for luck, two for luck and three for the old man's coconut!
GERMANY: SWEEEPING THE STAIRS OF CITY HALL In Germany, for men that do not have a girlfriend on their 30th birthday, they have to sweep the stairs of city hall!
The birthday guy's friends will throw trash on the stairs. With every mess that is cleaned, more trash is thrown. The belief is that every girl can see that this man reached the age of 30 and still doesn't have a girlfriend (and that he is capable of cleaning a house well)
ISRAEL: CHAIR RAISING Well, this certainly sounds like fun! On their birthday, a child sits in a chair while grown-ups raise and lower it a number of times corresponding to the child's age, plus one for good luck.
ITALY: EAR PULLING Yes, you read that correctly...in Italy, it is customary to pull the birthday child's ears as many times for as how old as they are.
IRELAND: HEAD HITTING? Not sure how well child advocates will approve of this tradition, but Irish tradition is for a child to be held upside down and “bumped” on the floor, once for every year of their age plus one for good luck.
MEXICO: THE BIRTHDAY PIÑATA The tradition of the piñata has caught on here in the U.S. for children's birthdays. The piñata is filled with candy for the blindfolded children to whack away with a broomstick to have lots of goodies come pouring out!
RUSSIA: BIRTHDAY "PIES" Instead of a birthday cake, the birthday pie is the custom in Russia with a special birthday greeting carved into the crust!! SCOTLAND: A POUND NOTE & A SOFT SMACK I think I'm beginning to see where the tradition of "birthday punches" stemmed from - In Scotland, not only is a pound note given for every year old the child is and an additional pound for good luck, but they are also the recipient of a soft smack on the bottom for each year.
Headed to the gym again today - maybe a class or two - I have my eye on a Meditation Class, that I think I could use since I've been EXTREMELY STRESSED the past week or so - multi-tasking way too much!! But, not before, I burn off some steam on the treadmill and elliptical.
WISHING MY DEAR CUZ A MOST SPECIAL DAY AND WITH AMAZING CELEBRATIONS!!
Tanya's Daily Blog NEXT TRIP DEPARTS IN: 1 DAY
It's my BIRTHDAY!!!!
WooHoo YAY meeeeee!
Today is my day to celebrate me - I'm not a selfish person (as much as that statement might have me sound).
In fact I am quite the opposite. Sure I like to do things my way and I live me life by my rules - but shouldn't we all???
I spend the entire year doing what I want to do and going where I want to go. That come my birthday I want to spend the time sharing it with those we love and care about me.
I use to go on a birthday trip every year and spend my birthday celebrating it on random trips and sometimes with random people...
But those are days of the past and like I said, I would much prefer to spend my day with the people who are excited that it's my birthday and who want to celebrate me!
And you know me and how addicted I am to all things travel - so of course I'm gonna have a birthday trip planned - just not on or over March 19th. In fact I've already got one planned - and we leave for it tomorrow!
I have also made it a point to not be gone over certain holidays or other family members birthdays...especially ANY of the kidlettes.
Plus - getting back to my birthday - we had a fabulous day (yesterday) celebrating it in San Diego.
I'll post the pics and tell ya more later on...
For now I'm about to head into the Huntington Library and Gardens to go check out the Cherry Blossom Festival!!!
